[P4rgaming] Majority of Gamers Today Can't Finish Level 1 in Super Mario Bros - Page 12

Beside the legend of zelda remark earlier, there is conta, some of the mega man games, castilvania. Those weren't epic games because of the story or graphics or "omg head shot!". Those games you really needed coordination and fast thinking even after repeating the same level 10000 times.

Put a game like that in a modern graphics and backstory, and you will need to "stupid down" the game to make it more attractive and not "omg its so hard screw it!" type of hatred.

That's the problem. Most new gamers no longer have the willpower to learn and to aspire to be better at what they do than they were. If a game is hard today, most people are not going to get better. The most likely outcome is that they'll put the game down. Developers of course know this, and the big publishers actively encourage this. So you get games like CoD.

Part of the reason is because for many new players it's feel that it's "just a game, therefore it should require no skill". But at the same time, that of course kills it for gamers like us. The article may be fake, but it's indicative of problems within the high end of gaming today.

I know I am unable to finish level 1 of Super Mario Bros ... because I find the whole franchise of Mario Bros stupid, boring, and uninteresting that I would never hit the start button.

Although i agree, a small portion of me that has a grain of faith left in mankind says that this article is more sensationalism.

And really, if there is truth in this, it's more of a representation of the decline in gaming in general - not so much a decline in peoples ability. Games nowadays lack challenge and a real sense of achievement. Heck i remember playing old NES/SNES games as a kid and skipping school just to beat certain levels/bosses.

I think modern games just normally appeal to the more common denominator, which sadly is often the more casual and less experienced player. A good example of this is how many modern console games have aim/steering assist or other such things.

Reminds me why i play on PC really, because at least most games can be modded to make them tolerable.

Exactly. People want instant gratification and developers work to that.

I had Wing Commander, Master of Orion, and X-com instead.

You need to tell me what quests you recall that did this in Zelda, cos i certainly don't remember any. You were usually told through dialogue where you needed to go or what to do. Unlike in say, Skyrim where you can simply waltz to various locations, paying no attention to your surroundings because you follow a map marker.

Thats something which could've been implemented better in Skyrim - rather than hand-holding the player from the word go, they should've given the player the choice of purchasing a compass from a vendor, thereby displaying map markers/pointers if they needed assistance. This is certainly something i've wanted to see modded in for some time, as well as map purchases for various holds.

It's unfortunate really that it's always the less then ambitious mods that get the most attention. Quite sick of seeing non-lore friendly anime rubbish in Skyrim.

My dad couldnt beat the first goomba. My cousin who is 20 couldnt get past the first 3 skeletons in SNES Super Ghouls n Ghosts. So I believe it.

Id believe this to be true regardless if it is. What games were and what they are now is basically two opposing extremes. There is a video of Orson Welles saying how the marketplace is the enemy of the artist, and how he wasted his life trying to prove he was right, and I believe this to be whats happening in gaming. It not possible for some to see what has changed in gaming and who am I to argue if people should enjoy it or not, I guess I am the one being the fool since I think anything different. Its just basic laws of economics and you can see this trend in 1000's of other areas of life.

Artistic Trend -> Rise in Popularity -> New Market -> Market prime directive puts artistic prime directive as secondary -> decrease in quality of art (or system/culture/etc)
or adherence to meet a wider consumer base.

Also gaming is now PC as in politically correct and went from a male space with much freedom and skill and competition as being the only things that matter to..... well, the thing it is now. Btw I have green eyes and am left handed, which makes me a 1% minority and left handed is a disability in most games and the light from the screen hurts my eyes, please donate to me on these bases and not on my performance. Im just a left handed gamer, left handers game too! Im not asking for attention cuz Im left handed, but I will ask for money. I bet you didnt know left handed people game. They do. Give me money. MONEY.

Gaming has gone from gaming to greeding. Time is money friend.

The games most of us hardcore and PC enthusiasts loved are a dying or dead breed. Throwing money at corporations whose main objective is to make money, to try to get them to fix things, is like throwing drugs and at a junkie trying to scare him off. The results are expensive and not effective although absurdly hilarious.

How to save gaming:

1) Dont buy consoles, ever (or console ports)
2) Dont buy games on release, make products prove themselves in metacritic reviews not paid reveiwed, create accountability and quality control, demand playable demos
3) Boycott DLC, especially first day DLC, boycott pay to win, etc
4) Evangelize the gaming masses and show them the good games that used to be, maybe some of them will like it.
5) Find something else to give your money/time to instead of bitterly hoping things change, the only thing companies understand is their bottomline and possibly their image
6) Send me bars of gold (Tribute for my ferocious defense of gaming)

And most people from back then won't be able to finish a level without dying in any of the modern games, either.

Every game I play is easy, so easy that they are all kinda retarded to me. 3 weeks ago I started playing Dark Souls and still can't stop. So hard and challenging game where you don't choose difficulty level, there is only one. I didn't experience something like this for many many years. I tried playing other games too, but they just seem like child toys compared to DS. I am not sure I will be able to play any other game after this, except if it is challenging.

i actually destroy every game i play and find them not challenging and cannot really find the feeling of accomplishment of finishing a hard game i had when i was a kid, i am 28 and from the ataris/coleco era trust me game are easy and it make sense (most people find it boring to lose at game) they like to have it easy, i don't.

I'm pretty sure I just beat the first level in my head a couple times in the time it took me to read that. I'm not kidding.

I'm still in my 20s... yet I feel so old now.... Thanks a lot.
