Yes, we get better by repeating a task. I have the same problem, since I'm a hardcore gamer doing 40h a week sometimes.
But take an average gamer from either era, and switch the games from each era, and the results will be surprising. People back then played less games, and I cannot imagine they would do that well in modern games. Take an MMO, or twitch FPS as examples, compared to Super Mario, there's 3 action buttons for Mario or so? Have you seen the MMO keyboards/mice? There are 1-2 enemies on screen on Mario, and all you have to do is jump and bounce on them. How does that compare to BF3 where you are in a more realistic scenario, with debris flying around you, smoke, lighting effects, tanks, jets, your team, the enemy team, mines, etc etc.... you get the idea
