I would like to pose a stupid question about FX CPUs, if I may...

Probably going to wait until Steamroller before upgrading from my crappy little 960t, but I'm curious about this now and can't seem to find anything on it...

Can 2/3-module FX chips have their (presumably locked) modules or individual cores made active using UCC/ACC, as can be done with the 960t's two potentially-defective cores? Or are they different dies/laser-severed/etc?

I would assume not, given that it would be something of a Big Deal as it was with the Phenom IIs, just want to know for sure so I don't eventually go buying something with the hope of unlocking it.

No sir, they cannot be unlocked.

Yeah unfortunately, no unlock for FX.

Your CPU however can potentially unlock though, and is still a well regarded chip for the Phenom II line

Oh, I'm aware that the chip in general is decent, and mine does indeed unlock stably...

...unfortunately I apparently got a bad chunk of silicon, since mine maxes out at 3.8ghz as a x6 and a barely-stable 3.9 as a x4. This is with pushing maximum voltage through it; I actually run x4@3.8/1.44v for 24/7 use. There's an old thread around here somewhere documenting my struggle to get this piece of crap up to 4ghz...
Every now and then, I still contemplate buying a now-cheapish 965 as I'd originally planned, just to see how high I can take it in comparison :\

Anyway, thanks for the quick answers. I can't help but feel a little disappointed, but "no" was indeed the answer I expected.

Better that then buying it and finding out the hard way lol

Can you post a link to your thread? I would like to take a look at it

Sure, maybe you'll think of something the rest of us didn't; http://www.overclock.net/t/1229087/yet-another-960t-oc-thread-cant-break-4ghz

To be honest 3.8 is an excellent OC for that CPU of yours. I know everything's been covered in that thread already but I wish I had a hexacore running at those speeds. It's about equal to a Piledriver so not too bad. You are right in waiting for SR, which is what I'm doing then upgrading and keeping that CPU for years to come as we've reached the point of diminishing returns. Both AMD and nVidia are going to concentrate on power consumption and different market segments and aren't directly competing in the high end anymore, they have other priorities.

ye 3.8ghz is a decent overclock for 960T. depending on how bad you need higher performence you could wait until 2014 (2nd/3rdQ or so) Im pretty sure your 960T should perform pretty well until then. or get one of the shelves right now, a FX8320 is pretty cheap now.
