ASUS P8Z68-V won't boot with a specific hard drive attached

I boot from a 64GB SSD and have a 1.5TB HD155UI and a 500GB HD503HI (both Samsung) data drive. About 6 months ago the system would do what I thought was crashing/freezing when the IRST drivers would be loading, you know the dashes in the upper left corner. It would render funny colors/lines across the top of the screen, but just a few pixels high. After some trouble shooting I realized it was related to the 500GB drive and would boot fine with it unplugged. Strangely enough it would boot fine when plugging it into a different SATA port. The port works fine and other devices work in it. I can even hot plug the drive with the system running.

A few months later it happened again and I moved it to a different port, and a few months later again, and now I cannot get it to boot with the drive attached at all. All health data checks out and have scanned the drive for errors, and it benchmarks with expected performance. I simply cannot figure this out. I have updated the BIOS to the most recent version and updated IRST to the latest version/drivers, hoping this would solve the problem, but no dice. I do not know how to fix this or continue troubleshooting this. I can leave it running and in sleep mode for now, but it's a pain in the butt to open the case and plug it in every time I want to use it. This is my main data drive.

To update this, as I was looking through the motherboard manual after it "crashed" at various BIOS options, after 3 minutes it actually booted to the desktop, but it usually takes around 20 seconds. Anyways, I don't know what kind of conflict or problem could delay the boot for 3 minutes. Maybe if I attach an image of the screen while it's doing this somebody may think this familiar. Sorry for the long post.

Actually, after completing the boot (I never left it on the "crash" screen that long) I tried to repeat the event and get a picture and it booted right to the destop without delay. Of course previously it was repeatable 50 times in a row. I have no idea what happened, but hopefully it won't happen again. If anyone has any theories I would like to hear them, because this is an interesting problem. I was about to swap power cables and eventually format the drive if nothing else worked.
