It seems most people here just read the title and post whatever their favorite game is...

OP says he wants a big world full of adventure, and prefers third person view. With those criteria, I would recommend the following

Skyrim

Fallout 3

Fallout New Vegas

Dragon Age: Origins(and if you like this, you can move on to the more linear, but still great, Dragon Age 2)

Kingdoms of Amalur

These may be a bit too linear but Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 are great games with a huge universe to explore, though not in an open world fashion.

I just listed of these games assuming you know what they are and what kind of games they are, if you want some further explanation on why you should try them, let me know. I'd be happy to explain.

Dragon Age: Origins and the Mass Effect games are also great games, not focused only on adventure like the aforementioned titles, but are still amazing. Some of the other recommendations in this thread are really puzzling.

I have skyrim that I downloaded yesterday but I spent so much time trying to get Unreal's mod lists going and at the end of it I couldn't even play like 10 minutes without it crashing so I said screw it. However I think I'm going to give Enad's guide a try.

This is a screen shot from Unreal's site

anyone know which mod this is and will it work with Enad's mods?

There's a lot of mods going on in that screenshot. The main difference is that picture uses some ENB config, while the other mod list you saw has RCRN listed instead. If you opt not to use RCRN and use the same ENB in Unreal's list, it will work fine.

If your game is a crashy bugfest, I recommend doing a fresh reinstall (uninstall it, delete the folder in Steamapps\common and the one in Documents\My Games). Then reinstall the game and go with the mods in Enad's/my list, which all work together perfectly (or use that ENB instead of RCRN). I recommend avoiding the Quests series and Places series mods though, since these may cause instability.

Fallout 3 is made by the same developers as Skyrim, and New Vegas is similar though not quite as good in terms of open world freedom/versatility (but still way better than everything else). These are must-haves as well.

Not sure what you're trying to point out in that picture? The ENB?

Believe me, ENB isn't that great. Pretty in screenshots but once you get in game it's just a blur fest and overdose of bloom.

If you follow my guide, you'll see there are multiple sections(Graphics, Gameplay, Quests and Misc). It's easy to miss but at the top of the article it has a little box and some arrows where you can change the page.
Under Graphics is RCRN. This is a full on lighting overhaul mod. It's an incredible mod and does a much better job at keeping the Skyrim mood than any ENB does. It's also not demanding like many ENBs are.

Bored and I worked collaboratively on that guide so if you have any questions feel free to PM me or post here (Bored too but I don't want to speak for him!).

Okay I will follow the guide you guys worked on. I think I'll also try Batman Arkham City.

Just Cause 2 is quite the adventure for me. I spend hours driving around. The textures are a little dated, but with SweetFX the mountains and the entire atmosphere is just amazing.

Not to mention, the multiplayer beta is coming up in 11 days ! For the two days I played it last time, I honestly haven't had that much fun in a long time.

This is totally not up the genre you mentioned, but I'll toss the recommendation out there. I loved Skyrim, the whole Mass Effect series, Bioshock series, etc. However, I've dumped more time into this game than any of those. So if you get bored with games, this might be good bang for your buck.

Empire Total War.

A good combination of turn-based strategy with real-time battles that can be fought (and generally must be at higher difficulty settings). It's very simple to get moving on, but I keep learning better tricks for managing some of the finer aspects of the game. However, if you don't like strategy, long-term planning, and don't get a kick out of making RTS decisions, you won't like it.
