Why can't even GA-Z87X-OC Force do X16 SLI?

Is it a limitation of the chipset/CPU? It's interesting that older boards were able to do it.

I'm assuming you mean that the 2 PCI-E 3 slots run at x8/x8. The Z87 only supports 16 lanes of PCI-E 3, so they must run at x8/x8. The only way around this is the boards that use PLX chips for more lanes in order enable SLI/CFX with more than 2 cards.

Yes, that's what I meant because SLI is at least X2 smile.gif

I wonder why they downgraded latest chipsets. (?)

The chip provides the pcie lanes for the GPU, also it would have made the board more expensive. Hence why there is an OC Force and all those other $400 boards have the PLX chip as well.

Z68 and Z77 both have the same amount of lanes.

Z68 has 16 lanes of PCI-E 2, Z77 has 16 lanes of PCI-E 3 like the Z87.

The high end chipsets (x58 with 36 lanes, x79 with 40) have more, but not mainstream ones.

What do you mean? I can see no Z87 board that can do X16 SLI.

Ah I see. That explains it. It 's a bit weird though because a lot of those purchases are done for the Enterprise which might need less raw graphics output while gamers usually get the Mainstream OC models.

But I get it, it might increase cost a lot so it might directed more to a tiny minority of gamers that is in turn only a part of those that go for the highest end.
