Is q9400 bottlenecking my GPU?

I've noticed that on some games i get big fps drops when many things happening at once on the screen.

For instance, when i first reached Boston in AC3 my fps sometimes drops even to 20. In skyrim if i fighting a dragon in an open field my fps drops to 30. Similar things in witcher 2 in some cases.

However even in the above games i mentioned, my fps usually doesn't drop below 45, and comfortable sitting at 50 or above. So, in other words, my problem mainly is with low minimum fps, not with average.

Also, in other less demanding games like mass effect, the cod series, left 4 dead etc. my fps almost never drops below 55 or so.

I tried experimenting with the graphics settings but to no avail.

Do you guys have any idea why is this happening? Is it because of my CPU or maybe because of my mobo that uses the p43 chipset? Or i need a stronger system in general if i want to achieve higher minimum fps?

PC specs at my sig. I play on 1920x1080 resolution.

To answer your question, yes your CPU is a bottleneck in some games!

There are games like Skyrim that are not completely GPU bound and rely on the CPU as well. This happened to me when I had a q6600 clocked at 3.6 Ghz paired with my current 7950. I would see my minimum FPS take a hit in BF3 multiplayer and Skyrim for certain maps. As soon as i upgraded to my 3770k all minimum FPS issues disappeared.

Your options to eliminate or reduce this are:

1. OC your CPU some more
2. Upgrade you CPU, mobo and memory
3. lower the graphics setting in game

I'd save up and get either a Sandy or Ivy setup or you can wait for what's next after Haswell.

You might find some helpful information in this thread, too.

Thanks, i might try to log my cpu/gpu usage during the moments that my fps drops below 30 to see exactly what's happening.

Try getting your CPU up to 3.6. In all reality your CPU shouldn't be that "big" of a bottleneck for the GTX 660. Try ocing that a little as well. Sometimes I think "bottleneck" is thrown around way too easily.... I can see your fps dropping that low if you're trying "max" everything, but not on a mixture of high and medium settings.

^ This - I did this when I had the 460 for some games.

I have a 4.6ghz 4670k and when I piss off Whiterun by punching everybody in the face once, I get stuttering when I move about once every 5-10 seconds. Annoying. Only occurs during AI load. Suspect it's CPU bottleneck but scratching my head as 4.6ghz is pretty fast as is...
