ASUS Fan Xpert 2 w/Different Fans On Splitters, On One Header?

Thread Starter
Basically, my setup is going to have two 240mm radiators - one top and one bottom.

I want to do push-pull, and because of my purchases beforehand, I'm left with the current 8 fans to be used

  • 2x Noctua NF-F12 PWM
  • 5x Corsair SP120 PWM High Performance Edition
  • 1x Gelid Solutions PWM Slim UV Blue 120mm

I do not have a fan controller, and I want to connect all of the fans to my Sabertooth Z87 motherboard in order to take advantage of Fan Xpert 2. Therefore, I am going to end up using a 1+2 PWM splitter setup for 2 headers:

  • 1 PWM splitter connected to the header, providing 2x 4-pin female headers.
  • 2 PWM splitters connected to the first splitter, filling the 2x 4-pin female headers and resulting in 4x 4-pin female headers.

My top radiator will have 3 Corsair fans and 1 Gelid fan, and my bottom radiator will have 2 Corsair fans and 2 Noctua fans. I have checked amperage requirements for all of the fans (total < 1 amp for each setup), and I should be okay connecting those setups to one header.

The problem? The fans are rated for different RPM's
Which is why I'm wondering how Fan Xpert 2 controls fans. Does it just modify the voltage fed to the header? If it does, then my fans will all scale up and down consistent with voltage. What I'm worried about is if Fan Xpert 2 does not control fan RPM just by adjusting voltage. I notice that when first running Fan Xpert 2, it runs every fan from full tilt to off in order to find each fan's max RPM and minimum running voltage...

So how would that work for something like my first setup, where I've got 3 fans which run at a certain max RPM, and a 4th fan that runs at a different max RPM? How does Fan Xpert 2 operate in that case? Is it safe to use Fan Xpert 2 with different fans on the same header?

My next question is how Fan Xpert 2 works with splitters in general. My two front intake fans will need to be connected to a single splitter on a single header after my setup is finished. They're the same fans. Will Fan Xpert 2 be able to correctly calibrate them?

It's best to use the Same Fans for all of it, that way everything is set up the same.

Right, I assumed that much. But I'm looking more for information from somebody who knows what happens when you connect different fans to the same header.

It will run them to 100% or 55%, what ever you have it set to. Problem is for Example, if the Push Fans are at 1200RPM (45CFM) MAX and the Pull are 800RPM (25CFM) MAX your gonna have some nasty, hot dusty mess on the Rads, plus hotter temps. It would be best to use Pull OR Push with the same 2 fans instead of 4 mismatched fans.

Will it work? Yes.
Will it cool okay? Yes.
Will it be ideal? No
Will it be a Logistics nightmare? Yes.
Will i have all kinds of messed up air flow in the case due to a mix of Positive and Negative pressures? Yes.

Also, if you have more fans then the Header can handle, it might burn the circuit out OR just make all the fans run painfully slow, if not kick a Safety on Start-Up. I would only put 2-3 High Performance Fans on a Header, leaves some Headroom for Spin-Up and voltage Regulation.

I would just use a Fan Controller. Also, lets not forget the Header reading 5 different RPM's at once and further messing up the Controlling of said fans.

Sorry to wake up an old thread. Did you ever get an answer to this question. I too am curious. What if you use something like this, which uses sata power:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/20988/ele-1196/Swiftech_8-Way_PWM_Cable_Splitter_-_SATA_Power_8W-PWM-SPL-ST.html?tl=g47c251s1325

I want to be able to control the fans through Fan Xpert2 individually. Does it do that?

That would control all 8 fans at the same speed, well % anyways. The PWM uses all the fans and will only adjust all 8 at once, so i would use the same 8 fans.
