Didn't play the others until AC3 and even then it was still extremely drawn out and boring. Did have some nice elements to it but not much had changed throughout.
As someone with a deep hate of Ubisoft who HAS played the first game, second, and Brotherhood, I can confirm that while the first game sucked, they did get a lot of things right on the second try. Random examples:
-No pulling you out of the animus unless it's for a good reason
-Less linearity, many many more things to do
-A number of new weapons, many of them ranged. A number of my preferred assassination techniques involve making a lot of noise and attention (and in Revelations, explosions), but not necessarily drawn towards me.

A lot of the trailers show "stab, then run like hell" for the purposes of trailers. The free-running improved bit by bit, but there are plenty of missions where you can very successfully reach someone without being spotted. One feature I really liked was the ability to move into a group of people conversing, at which point a gray shader effect envelopes you to indicate that the crowd has made you invisible to enemies. (It's a lot better than the "travelling monks" mechanic from Assassin's Creed 1)

no biggy. I could say the same for every Final Fantasy game...but I keep it to myself. Whatever sizzles your bacon. Personal preference.
