well, as I am buying lga771 servers which is about the same as 775 in tech I can honestly say they are still 100% for the avg. home and even 95% for the avg. biz. I didn't read all your posts but if you are looking for server advise I would say stick with 775 or 771 on the Intel side I forget the AMD socket of this era, but I am using many Dell Poweredge 1950's and 2950's and even a few socket lga604 which is older but still very useful! In fact my 5 main websites are running on a pe2850 and just converted one pe2850 into a BEAST router lol, running PFsense. I am building a cluster with my remaining servers which should prove to be more than I would ever need for at least the next 5 years.

I have all my media and a few game servers running on a pe1950 for now but that will change after the cluster is up!

I have yet to find anything the lga771 or 775 can't do in my day to day stuff, BTW you should use a real server OS and get like cpannel or webmin and that way you don't need but even a crappy gpu so if you ever needed to access it from sitting in front of it you could. But most all servers use some form of remote desktop and ssh and telnet to use them. I have a KVM with 8 ports so I have one screen and keyboard and mouse for up to 8 servers

That's your answer right there. Just switch to a better graphics card and call it a day. Use the money for some other purpose.

And is RDP built into the OS?

Had a WHS wm on server its rather decent but I dont see which features you need. I tend to share my main aggregated media/download folder location as "Read Only" to "Everyone" in my lan and then map them from the computers where I need access, create another shared folder "upload" everyone can read/write/del which I then manually sort from accessing the server via rdp.

In Control Panel - System - Remote you can turn rdp on. Whats your mobo?

My motherboard should be this
Its a real server OS and it seems to be quite convenient, i don't need a full blown OS, a server OS should be good enough and WHS seems to make things simpler, may not add many things if at all but it seems to be easier to use.

Yeah I think I will switch to a better graphics card to save power, probably just a 5450 or a low end GPU, right after this Steam Summer Sale if I even have a wallet at the end.

Ahh you are adventurous, I have been looking at all the 2nd hand servers on ebay etc since years, hard to withstand with those specs at their prices. I held back mainly because they are loud and big, also power hungry and sucky to get parts for. I suppose if you got a spare room where noise is irrelevant it is the better deal. What are you going to cluster on?

Im running a simple e3, i3 esxi cluster with isci luns on a san with 5 RE4's, one raptor and an ssd, im very pleased with the performance. Could have got more off ebay 2nd hand but im enjoying the long warranty.

Only once was I bidding on something, a supermicro 1u 1366, was still going cheap but then the webpage went down, I rdp to another country and was also down. The guy won both very cheap, I still claim he DOSed the site, damn Swiss Ricardo auction!

just fyi you can find dell pe1950's around 200~500usd and 2950's for 300~700usd iv'e got lucky and got a few at 100 but that was really a great deal, plus the 1850's and 2850's are still a great unit for web sites and mysql databases (small ones like most of us would have) and hell you can find 1850 2850's for 50usd

oh and parts are readily available

I plan on taking pictures as soon as I get it all set up, right now it is a mess of servers everywhere lol

WHS is windows 7 stripped of a few things that dont matter much in performance and added a few more things that I dont find to useful or are easily achieved and surpassed with other software. You can find it cheap on sale if you really want, like me looking at the steam sale though nothing too crazy yet, this year I will buy a bundle!

How are you having problems sharing files in lan? I see how WHS has the shares and hard drives in the dashboard and in win7 you gotta go the the folder and share it from there, it comes down to the same underlying, maybe someone has made a dashboard shares app for win7!

Socket F or later (Socket G34) tongue.gif

I use RHEL5 for my servers, it's fantastic on top of the ESXi 5.0 i use

I wouldn't touch the 1850s and 2850s .. those are Netburst servers. Power hungry and slow
DL385 G1 is fantastic i can buy one without shipping for 100$ and it already has 8GB of RAM and 2 68W Opteron 275s in them

I understand using W7 as a server because a lot of people are comfortable with what they know. but when you need a server Os why would anyone buy WHS? Thats basicly BS for anything besides lan media and stuff, and basic tasks I meen there are at least 2 great MS server OS that would do sooo much better 2008R2 and 2012, On top of that there are at least half a dozzen linux server OS's that have a comparable ammount of documentation to WS and are FREE and would kill WHS any day.
I meen you might want to start out small, but why not future proof for when you might want to do another task in the future... better to not have to start over right??? Just my 2 cents
