I meen you might want to start out small, but why not future proof for when you might want to do another task in the future... better to not have to start over right??? Just my 2 cents
WHS is such utter rubbish i don't know where to start ... 2003 is just SO MUCH better. Fedora and CentOS are two great Linux OSes that comes to my mind that absolutely stomps WHS

Hmm interesting, might not get WHS.
What are 2008R2 and 2012 good for and what do they exceed in?

Also is it possible to upgrade to them from Windows 7? lol

Hmm okay, I think I'm sticking with the 775 socket server but I have a few questions.
What software firewall can I get to protect my server? I currently have Zone Alarm and have temporarily disabled it for my Minecraft server.

I'm also a bit stuck on choosing an OS, I'm currently running Windows 7 64 bit, considered WHS which I no longer see beneficial and I'm currently considering Windows Server operating systems.
I've given Linux a look and I'm thinking about running it in a VM for my server.

What is a good why to protect my Home server which houses some of my files and hosts a minecraft and a cube world server with friends and their friends?
The server engages in streaming files to other devices on my network and I only give the DNS IP to those who i invite, the IP changes every once and a while, is this helping to protect my server?

EDIT: I only host for 8 players

Simple PFsense, would be my first choice but there is so many and it comes down to which suits you but PFsense is used from home owner to big production server farms and its free

BTW I am planing to start a minecraft server to, my kid loves it big time and has asked if I could host her server (well its my kid so YES) lol any hints on getting it up and running like which mods and such, just basic stuff as I am going to be using my Proxmox-ve cluster for it which is different than anything you have I think. adding a hideous picture of my servers before rack mounting! I kinda just have them stacked up for now till I have everything in order

Nice cluster
I am going to have a ESXi cluster ... at the end of the year when i have the money
1x HP DL385 G1 2x Opteron 275 or maybe upgrading it to 285 (68W models) 8GB RAM (Stock) I already have it. 2x IBM 32P0731 and maybe 3 or 4 MAW3300NC
1x 2U 2x Opteron 285 16GB RAM Tyan S2882-D
1x weird form factor Dell C6100 board 2x L5520 24GB RAM
1x 2U 12(!) 3.5" bay Hotswap SAN storage (+A HP MD1000 that is connected to DL385) with 2x L5420s and 16GB RAM and HP P400i (w/ 512MB BBWC cache eat that lol) S5000PALR Mobo
2x HP DL365 G5 (2x Opteron 2378) with 16GB (I guess i'm doing 4x4GB) of RAM i think. Both will most likely have 3x73GB SFF HDDs RAID5
1x 4U 2x Opteron 2354 16GB just for fun (Silence optimized)
Or maybe even a quad Opty 8360 2U server ... Don't see any use in this but just for the heck of it tongue.gif

Jeez, i love me server hardware. That's like 7 servers(!) Maybe i'll cut it down to 6 servers or so.

lol, I have gone server nuts as well, those are just the ones I have up and running, there is allot more you don't see and also buying 2 more pe1950 gIII's and 3 pe2950 gIII's and a r710 loaded down and thinking about a Sun spark64 8core I just got the rack today in fact. Its a half rack in height but full depth so it will take my long azz servers lol. I also just got 3 more APC 750's rack mountable and set up the outside battery center so if the power goes out my sites and pc stuff will be up for about 12 hours I figure

edit nicest thing is my movies, the way I got it set up anywhere I have high speed net I can steam them to me

I wouldn't buy a used Sparc though ... they were expensive to begin with and they didn't have nearly as much performance as the X86 servers. Cool you got your movies. I use my fileserver for my anime downloads ... holding back on downloading them because i just critical'd (80% usage) another network 2TB array

my kid is heavy into anime! She draws and loves games that are older and drawn like Okami and stuff like that. I was only getting the SUN server as it was cheap for what they go for, and the guy that is using it now has 50 virtual machines running on it now and it is running as if it was just one rig, even with them all open and being used. But I agree I don't like Sun Servers normally it is just cheap enough to turn my head
