I've given PFsense a look, is it a good idea to run it on the server or a separate machine like a hardware firewall the home server I built is the only functioning spare build/parts I have.

I think you could use it on a VM as well with it's own dedicated lan ports but it's not recommended anyway ... Don't want local attacks risking your other VMs

Well most home guys from what I understand grab old PC even a pIII or p4 give it as much ram as she will hold and a hard drive hell even a 20gb drive is more than enough (says the guy running raid0 15,000rpm 36.4gb drives lol) and away you go if you have two Nic's of coarse! Other wise you could run it from a VM there are no advantages to the home guy using it on anything more than that other than bragging rights lol. I happen to of had the extra Dell PE2850 for mine was all, I was going to use a old Pentium D 920 rig on a test bench but I had the server so it just seemed like a good idea

I was considering that since my current rig minus the gpu and cooler would be ideal for what i need, but i think I'm gonna hold out a year or two for a steam roller or a next Intel architecture to last me a good few years, I'm pretty keen on going Intel next time.

Sig rig:
AMD Phenom II 3698mhz (3.6-3.7Ghz)
AMD Radeon 6850
6GB DDR3 2GB Corsair + 4GB Kingston (I think)
600W Corsair 80+ PSU (Will probably replace it with a much low wattage PSU)

I don't have any VMs at the moment but I did consider open nas, would it be safe to have one VM running with pfsense? If not are there any alternatives to protect my home server? I don't feel it's entirely safe.

well yes two NIC's are necessary if you are using it as a router and firewall for your network but if you are going to run it in a VM and just protect the stuff with in the VM box then well I think you can set it up Virtually. just to answer your other ??? if I understood it right PFsense is one of the most secure firewall OS'es out today, I myself saw a 90% drop in spam on my forums and not to mention the stupid jerks that think its fun to hack a nobody! I can see every attempt on the system and block it for good! I was getting about 15 new users a day on my forums that were bogas and now none, I will never run OPEN-WRT or DD-WRT as a firewall again at least on a router not sure about there x86 versions. I have about 1000 plus movies hosted to the net at this time and not one person that should not see or have access to them does

Think I already brought it up but Proxmox-ve for a VM is a great choice they have really come up in the world and are surpassing VMware's free version by leaps and bounds

Sounds nice I'll give it a look.

Is it possible to just use PFSense for the machine and not the network? I think the other machines are fine, its the server I'm worried about which shares files and hosts, PFSense is confusing to me and I might have the wrong picture of it.

lol I understand trust me PFsense confused the hell out of me to but once I figured it out it was so clear how it works it was like duh howw did I not figure this out on my own! lol But I will help you or even get The_Rocker another OCN member that helped me figure it out in fact here is a link to the thread that we are discussing PFsense just in case Click Here for other OCN Thread Also it is possible to use it just to protect the server in a VMware or KVM type setup with out having the second NIC but before we get everyone here off you original subject to far ask it in that other thread as others are watching it for this very same questions you have and you will get more help on it
