Would an A+ certification alone help me get a job?

Thread Starter
Alright so I recently graduated college but I'm having trouble getting a job. I realized much too late in my college career that my journalism major wasn't really going to provide me with a lot of job options.

What kind of job options would an A+ certification alone get me? Are there better options for me if I want to get a quick career in IT?

If you are looking to get into a computer related field, any cert will help vs your degree. The degree is nice to show dedication, but it isn't even remotely experience. If you can live without money, an internship (hopefully paid), will go a very long way to helping your career. A lot of internships lead to full time spots later in the same company.

Its sad that so many are graduating with no future afterwards.
Spending thousands for no return.
Since you already majored in Journalism, why would you turn away from it now?

I've never been in this situation so to be honest, I would not know how to help.

Well, my Father runs a small IT resales business here in NZ and he recently gave some job experience to some A+ students....
They had absolutely no idea what they were doing. They could turn a computer on and put one together but their troubleshooting skills were that of a 12YO kid.

I wouldnt go for A+, but! you never know..... might work out for you.
Depending on your Skillset, there are many other better things you could throw a few thousand at. Try learning some basic Programming languages if thats what you might be interested in.

Yes!
I was applying for a job here in Chicago and they asked me if I have A+, I told them I have a BS in Information systems and they told me no you need A+ to work here!
I start arguing with them that bachelor degree in that field is higher than a certificate and they insisted on the A+.

Anything can help, even in an unrelated field.

My electronics training put me above the rest for a cabinetmaking position, education is always a good thing.

If anything it would put you on a different path. Consider getting your Red Hat certification.

Depends on what type of IT you are going for. If you will work with hardware then yes. If your gonna deal more with networking or software dont bother, get a microsoft, novell, etc cert instead. Plenty of people in IT have degree's in other areas, IT degrees just got popular in the last 10 years or so. When i was in college 10 years back the advice was to get another degree like a business degree so that you could work IT but fall back on your degree for other jobs. Now people get IT jobs based on experience then degree/certs second. I have no degree and work in IT, Eric Snowden had no degree and our country gave him access to top secret information lol. Do anything you can to get experience, volunteer, intern, job...whatever gets experience from reliable sources on paper.

I volunteered to help a UN representative and ended up rebuilding her website as well as helping with her computer and cell phone. I helped my fiance's last boss 2 nights with MS Word stuff and didnt charge her just asked she give me a nice write up on LinkedIn. I will of course add that experience to my resume. On top of that i have some sample files (XL,Word,PPT,Scripts,VBA) that i can show an employer to give them examples of what i am capable of. Ill likely never show them to anyone but if they want to see it i have it in case.

In anycase A+ isnt what it used to be. Id recommend doing some research and finding out what type of IT job you might get into to and what certs directly relate to that work.

CCNA is what a friend of mine is getting a certification for. He graduates this semester with a BS in biology. He realized he didn't want to go onto medical school and got a cozy gov't job with that one requirement for a 60k+/year job. They're just waiting for him to show the certificate.

Good luck!
