Not getting the FPS that I should?

Hello, I have been wondering for a while now, but I feel as though I am getting lower frame rates that I should be, especially in MMO sort of games. Here's my current rig:

CPU: AMD FX 6100 @ 3.3GHz (Getting new heatsink tomorrow, OC goal @ 4.2-4.5GHz)
GPU: Sapphire HD 6870 Vapor-X Edition
RAM: 16GB 4x4GB 1600MHz GSkill Ripjaws
MOBO: Asrock Extreme3 970 AM3+
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 750 Watt
HDD: Boot - 5400RPM 2TB, storage - 5400RPM 1TB, 5400RPM 250GB + 5400RPM 750GB
Monitors: 3, 22" 1080p LG LED (But because I know my $200 GPU can't handle 3 screens very well I only game on my middle 1080p screen)

So for example, Torchlight 2, my fps is around 40 in town, and down to 15 in battle.
Tera Online: average 20-25 fps no matter what graphics settings, 1920x1080 or 5760x1080. I've taken it from low on 1080p, to max on eyefinity, with little to no fps difference and it is like this on several games.

For an example that it is not the game, I played them on my laptop and got much better FPS. Here are the specs:

CPU: Intel i7 3630QM @ 2.4GHz
GPU: Nvidia GT 650M 2GB
HDD: 5400RPM 1TB
Screen: 15" 1366x768
It's a Lenovo Ideapad.

in torchlight II I get at least 90-140 FPS almost everywhere with slight drops in big battles.
Not tested Tera, but have with other MMO's that have the same issue and the FPS is much better on my lappy.
The new cubeworld game that just came out in alpha? I get a good 60-70fps, but my friend with a 2500k and GTX 460 SE is getting average 200FPS.

This is driving me insane. I'm just out of ideas on what it could be, my desktop's power plan is on high performance. I'm looking online and people with a 2600k i7 and hd 6870 are getting on average 150 FPS, sure the 2600k is faster, but there's no way it should matter to this extent. Something has to be wrong. If you could provide me with an answer I would be very grateful.

even a noob like me can see that it is a cpu bottleneck. mmo's are cpu heavy games (intel biased if you prefer to call it that).

I would have to disagree to an extent, said friend and I have tested many games on my 6100 and his 2500k, his always come out better. the 6100 and the 2500k have very close benchmarks with the 2500k just barely pulling ahead. Yes it's faster, but not to this degree.

While also realizing you can look at videos of games played on my CPU with the same or similar GPU and see the frames, I have done so and mine are never to par.

benchmarks don't always match real time games in terms of performance. also i've heard mmo's are much better with ssd's and you are using hdd's.

A true and valid point, but I've seen many videos with just normal gameplay of people with my same CPU and GPU setups getting way better FPS than I do in a lot of videos, so something has to be wrong. This isn't a PC's fluctuation from just being a different PC, it's an unresolved issue. Also keep in mind that games tend to stutter. I'm thinking that my GPU may have a defect.

Processor bottleneck seems the only possible hardware constraint there.
A 2500K is much better than an FX-6100 for IPC.

Nothing to do with the HDD or SSD, I say.
The laptop is on an HDD, right? wink.gif
And it's also a SB capable of ~3Ghz on 4 cores.

See what OCing the FX does for it tomorrow.
If that doesn't make a difference by even 4Ghz,
I would wonder if something's wrong on the software level of the PC (not hardware).

is your CPU and/or GPU overheating and causing it to throttle? check temps. no way its a CPU bottleneck.
