Painting, Windows and Questions (oh my)

Hey guys,
I am getting my P180B for christmas from the g/f (w00t). I plan on painting the interior black and also inserting a window. I know there are a number of FAQs on these subjects but I wanted to ask some questions particular to my circumstances

1) Because I am painting just the inside of my case, and it will not receive the battering that most paintjobs get on the outside of cases, how many layers of primer and color coat and clear coat should I need?

2) If I put screws into the mobo holes and other screw holes, then paint, when I unscrew them will they disturb a great deal of the paint around them?

3) What is the dry time between primer layers, between primer and color, and between color layers? Some say 5 hours, others a full 24 hours.

4) Should I go with matte black to prevent dust from being noticable or with a metallic black? Either way I plan on using a layer or two of clearcoat.

5) If I choose to use my jigsaw for cutting my window, what is the best way to get a template to cut rounded corners? Coffeecan?

6) How many teeth should my jigsaw blade have? Carbide?

7) Can I use a router to make really good edges on the plexi? I have a nice routing table and a number of bits, what type would be best?

Thanks for any help you can provide guys =D

1 one or two layers should be fine

2 only if the screw will hit the paint, when you screw it thight it will scratch the paint also

3 that sort of info is on the spray can, but mostly after 15 / 20 minutes you can spray again

4 on both dust is seen noticable. if you want endurance paint, go metalic. if you want cheap but good paint go matte. (WARNING: matte absorbs light, metalic reflects light)

5 everything that's round and has the size you like... but better to use a round drill (dunno what size you're talking about)

6 dunno, sorry -

7 same here, my technical english isn't that great only commen english is understandable to me

hope some other guys can help you also

I would do 2 layers of primer, Dont worry about putting screws in the mobo tray holes, dry time between coats of primer is 15-30 mins, but between coats of color and clear it is considerably longer, I recommend sanding between coats of color and clear so you would want to wait until color and clear is completely dry, it takes longer but it is worth it in the end. Matte black is a good finish but boring, metallic stands out. For rounding out your corners use a metal file and then sandpaper. Jigsaw blade should be a fine tooth blade, make sure it is meant for metal and it does not have to be carbide. A router should be fine, just make sure you take it slow and leave yourself lots of room for error.

Hope this helps,
James

Thanks guys, +rep. Any more thoughts?

I have two UV CCFL and am leaning toward Metallic paint, any thoughts on how that may work out? its pretty common to use the metallic black with Tt Armors, I believe.

I was planning on doing this painting order:

1) Clean case Hella good with rubbing alcohol and clean rags
2) 1 light coat of (BLACK)primer and 2 hours dry time with light fan
3) Light sanding with 1000 grit wetdry sandpaper to take off the "orange peel" then clean it again with tack cloth
4) Another light coat of (BLACK)primer and 2 hours dry time with small breeze from low fan again.
5) sand again with 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, tackcloth after drying
6) First light coat of black (Metallic) paint and solid 12 hours dry time
7) Light sanding with 1500 grit wetdry sandpaper to smooth out any drips/thick areas
8) Second light coat of metallic black paint with 12 hours dry time
9) Light sanding with 1500 grit wetdry sandpaper again
10) Third light coat of metallic black paint with 24 hours dry time
11) Light sanding with 1500 grit wetdry sandpaper and tackcloth cleaning
12) Two clearcoat layers with 2000 grit sanding in between. Wait 36 hours (with fan) before thinking about other installation.

Done.

The good thing is that I dont have all my hardware, so I wont be tempted to put stuff into the case early. Also, having the case window to install should also keep me busy while waiting for paint to dry. Yay for having a solid week off work to do this. Yay for my dad having a lot of nice tools to use as well.

I will probably test some pieces out withthe router. I will also probably use a Folders can for the rounded sides. I still have to figure everything out for the window, though. Its going to require lots of planning. Hopefully my replacement P180 door will arrive in the mail this week. otherwise, I wont be home to sign for it

1) 2 Primer, Probably 2-3 Color, and 2 Clear.

2) Yes, it will interrupt the paint.Just leave them out and when it comes time to install, just screw them in an out a few times. This will cause you less headache.

3) Depending on the primer. I only let mine dry for less than an hour between primer coats. And a couple to few hours on the paint. It depends on the temp where your painting. IMO

4) Metallic, if your going to use clear coat on either, dust will still be noticable. So, the shinier the better!

5) You could use a compass, CD, Coffee Can...whatever..

6) Blades must have @ least 24 TPI (Teeth Per Inch), IMO

7) I'm not sure, but I think it could work. Google it. =)
