HD Radeon 6870 fan not working

Thread Starter
I have been experiencing tempratures issues a while now. I was used to the 40-45 C at full use but lately it has been spiking between 50-90C. I was worried and increased the fan speed using MSI Afterburner. It didnt help much. A couple of days later the image went off yet not the machine. I opened it and saw the fan from my GPU not spinning. Before my fan completetly stopped it was already malfunctioning. When i tried to force the fan to spin manually i noticed some resistance.

I am able to somehow turn on the computer and it even gives image but the span isnt working. Is there a way to fix this? I want to try this http://www.overclock.net/t/1320936/tutorial-on-fixing-a-noisy-xfx-radeon-hd6870-fan but im insecure about the results.

I am planning in trying this out but im unsecure of what exactly to do in the last part. How will this help the fan to respond again and pretty much fix my GPU.

I have another plan in case this one seems to be too complicated or not helping. It is purchasing a case fan and make it blow directly to the GPU.

I hope anyone can clear my doubts and help me out with this one. I already submitted a warranty report but no responses so far.

mdrgon-Iam sorry your having these issues man! But dont worry theres a couple diffrent things we can do here! The question is how much do you wanna spend and how much do you like that card?............... My 1st option would be to find a USED water cooler from OCN marketplace and do the red mod to the gpu where you take off the heatsink and install the watercooler directly onto the gpu! 2nd thing.....We can find a card thats exactly like yours for parts and swap the heatsink, or if you can measure the size of the current fan we can proobly just order a replacement fan it schoudlnt be that hard to replace! ........I wouldnt game on it in the mean time so you dont risk overheating the card which one of those options goes well with you?

You can also get a case fan to blow on it but I dont think that will give the desired effect-You can try it and see how well the temps sit but I wouldnt get my hopes up on the case fan cooling the card properly! Can you please post a picture of the video card we are talking about and also let me know how much you are willing to spend to fix this. Thanks and sorry for the double post

My GPU is a XFX HD Radeon 6870 http://www.videocardcomparisons.com/graphics-card-profiles/ati-radeon-hd-6870/

To be honest i am hoping not to spend much on it. I do need the card for gaming and for at least a couple of months until i save up enough for a new whole rig (From case to RAM). And sadly i would only spend about 20 dollars. That´s why either fixing the current fan or getting a VGA Cooler to blow on it are the only 2 best options.

Unfortunantely i am not an expert in disarming hardware and barely done a couple of things. I did manage to get the graphic card open and check out for dust or even take a look if the card wasn´t friend. I have some thoughts in how removing the fan and maybe the heatsink and i will surely try it if i can get to fix it.

I am currently using a really (REALLY) bad VGA integrated to the MOBO.

Thanks for replying.

seems like a seized fan, i'll look online for a replacement but i'll need the dimensions of the distance between screw holes. can you also take a photo of your card so we can have a look if there is more problems such as dust build up.

Ok I had this same card .....I was hoping you had the Refrence design card-This one But still I think we can get a replacement fan from either XFX or measure the fan demnsions and you can possibly look at micro center do you have one in your area?
Heres my old xfx 6870- But between us here I overheard people saying these cards are NO good! They die really fast, I took mine back within the 1st week I bought it. The objective here is to spend as little as possible to get you by until you upgrade your rig right?

I´m sorry but i currently can´t upload any current pictures of my video card (Really unlucky moment). I took a rough measurement and there are 3 holes in a triangle pattern and the distance between is about 3.5 mm.

I will upload a picture of the front and back side of the fan later but in the mean time this is the exact same model i have. CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 100Please bear with me.

Thanks for the help.

To nz3777.

I already took it to a ¨repair¨shop and i dont think i can trust them. They basically said to me that they arent responsible for any harm done to the card when i asked a simple maintenance and fan replacement. Either way i do not believe there´s a store where i can find just a fan. (Believe it or not) I would have best luck purchasing it online.

And exactly as you said there seems to be a really bad reputation with these cards specially when it comes to the fan but once again it is just until i manage to finally upgrade everything and that wont be until at least a couple of months (Looking forward for a very nice rig)

Once again thanks for the help.

how many wires does the fan have? it it a 3-pin or 4-pin?
Thread Starter
From the fan to the card it is jus one wire, a 2-pin one. From the PSU to the card there are 6-pin x2.

I have tried to find a replacement within the city without any luck, liek i said i would have better luck in purchasing it online.

I took the fan out, cleaned it and for a second i was surprised (along with hopefull) it might work. It felt smoother and the resistance i felt before was gone, but again, no luck. When i forced it to spin, somtimes, it contineud along but for less than a second and really weak.

The fan model is this one.

It isnt that i dont want to upload current pics of my card and my fan but i can´t. I have no ways in doing so. The camera of my phone is dead, and i have no other method. (I don´t know if i have said this already but this is ona hella of unlucky month to me). I will really try to upload it later but im hoping this will be enough.

Once again thanks for trying to help me out here.

Im considering in purchasing a VGA Cooler to blow directly into the GPU. http://www.amazon.com/Titan-Adjustable-Dual-Cooler-TTC-SC07TZ/dp/B0069W28SU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1373501420&sr=8-9&keywords=VGA+Coolers , again it is just an idea and believe it wont resolve the issues (hopefully im wrong).

It seems that the fan just doesnt work either that or theres something wrong with the whole GPU. I have found a fan but not sure if it will fit.
