I guess you haven't spent that much time reading about 8.1 then, people that install the Preview version will have all of their Metro and Desktop applications deleted when upgrading to the RTM version. Performing a clean install will be the way to go with 8.1 as far as I'm concerned, I even saw several posts on complaints regarding issues/etc with the upgrade procedure from 8 to 8.1 Preview.
Either way, I always recommend doing a clean install vs an upgrade, it's the safest way to update an OS IMO, just backup everything and let it rip.
And BTW, just like with this Preview version when people assumed it was only going to be available through the Microsoft Store, I would bet all my money that Microsoft will once again release an .iso for 8.1 once it hits gold, either through TechNet, MSDN, DigitalRiver, DreamSpark, etc... It'll happen (:
