[Phys.org] ARM chip makers set to reach 3GHz next year

What the article didn't mention is the voltage these Arm chips would be running at max clock to reach these 3 Ghz clocks. The Krait 300 in Snapdragon 600 is running at 1.25V+ to reach 1.7Ghz on HTC One, the A15 on Galaxy S4's Exynos 5410(Octa) is running at 1.3V+ to reach 1.6 Ghz according to the recent Anandtech podcast. Even though both of those are at 28nm, those are still significantly higher than the voltage Intel 22nm Finfet CPUs are running at similiar clocks( under 0.9 V).

How much TSMC/Sasmung's 20nm process HKMG(not 3D Finfet) process would reduce the voltage is going to be interesting, I am guessing it would be hard for them to drop to Intel level with just 2D HKMG.

Wonder what the heat and power consumption will be like. IIRC the Exynos 5 dual was already guzzling energy in the Nexus 10.

According to Anandtech, that's because Samsung probably is running A15 way past ARM's recommended clocks. For ARM, A57(A15's successor) should be running at 1.7Ghz clocks on 16nm Process, Exynos 5250 is running its 32nm A15 at the same 1.7Ghz

Won't be in smartphones. The power consumption of these things under full load would be approaching Intel ULV processor thermal specs.

Aka it will be tablet only and 1-2 Chinese manufactures will stick it in a phone anyways. If the clock speed is any indication of future performance, then its game over for Tegra and intel will have an even worse then expected uphill battle of trying to get silvermont (atom) into the tablet space.

At Intel ULV equivalent TDP I doubt it's going to fit in a slim, fanless tablet like typical Android tablets. I think Bay Trail will do alright later this year, since it's expected to compete with ARM chips in power consumption.

Note that Medfield already competes with ARM Cortex-A9 in power consumption.

It'll consume far more power and still only be on-par with Intel's Bay Trail if the 3Ghz clock speed is true and it will likely require active cooling in such a form factory. Active cooling is one of the pitfalls of having a powerful central processor(Intel's Core i) and if people are willing to accept this con, then they will likely opt for the system that gives them the performance to match. Not this ARM chip.
