help determining a server setup for my needs

Thread Starter
First post here after some lurking and such.
I am looking to either build or re use an old PC to turn into a nas, but the catch is I would like to be able to access my files from outside of the home network. I have seen owncloud but it requires me to pay for a domain and my usage is not high enough for it to be worth it in the end.
Along with the possible nas duties it would be nice to also use it as a semi-dedicated torrent server.

As far as hardware I own goes I have a pentium desktop, a amd athlon x2 desktop, and a raspberry pi.

If this is in the wrong sub-forum I apologize, I looked and did not see any where else that would be fit for me to ask

Which CPUs exactly? Any of them are basically powerful enough just for file hosting. The Pi is limited in number of HDDs.

Access your server from outside isn't that hard. You just need a "static" IP which you can get from a service like NoIP for free: http://www.noip.com/personal/#

The Pentium is a 2.4ghz single with 1gb of ram, the athlon is a 2.7ghz dual with 4gb of ram, and I would need no more than probably 2tb so no raid cards or anything extreme, if you wanted the model #'s I will have get them tomorrow

What models exactly? Pentium is a marketing term. It sounds like you have an ancient Netburst CPU though... those burn through power. Does its motherboard even have SATA ports?

The Athlon is probably a better choice and probably has 4 SATA ports?

The pentium is old I think it is Prescott but it might be older, and yes it only has ide/ata the board does not even have pci-e, the athlon needs a new mobo the one I have my eyes on has 4 sata ports and I would only need 2

Edit:
Here is the athlon
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cpu-world.com%2FCPUs%2FK10%2FAMD-Athlon%2520X2%25207750%2520Black%2520Edition%2520-%2520AD775ZWCJ2BGH%2520(AD775ZWCGHBOX).html&ei=iUTeUc-OBqOrygHazoGgCw&usg=AFQjCNEwUupW_Y5RbbSMgExqv3cvpcYcyA&sig2=Nxjd5-XCqwWRlOhVHf8LzQ

And the pentium is actually northwood circa 2001 or so
