pulling hybrid raid drives from Synology DS212J (SHR) and placing in a new server

Hello everyone,

I've just built a server/HTPC, and I'd like to remove the 2 x 3TB drives I have in my Synology NAS, and place them in the new server. The drives are set up in SHR (synology hybrid raid) format, with one disk fault-tolerance.

Here's a screenshot of the DS212J's current storage manager window - synology SHR drives.jpg 85k .jpg file

I'm intending to use FreeNAS on the server, and I don't imagine that it's as simple as just pulling both drives from the NAS and placing them in the server. It would be great if that was case though.

I'm guessing that I should;
  1. pull the 1st drive out of the NAS and put it in the new server
  2. remove the 2nd drive from the NAS and wipe it
  3. put 2nd drive in the new server
  4. rebuild the array

Is this the right way to go about transferring drives to a new machine that will use a different raid format questionmark.gif

@OP

I've no idea what RAID and/or filesystem technology Synology use in their products, but I'd guess it's proprietary like Drobo. Best bet would likely to be to buy 2x 3TB drives for the FreeNAS system, copy your data to them and then remove the Synology drives and add them to the FreeNAS unit.

When you use Synology Hybrid Raid with 2 disks they are essentially a mirror. I would take the first disk from the Syno, put it in the server and format it. Then copy the data from the remaining disk in the Syno to the disk in the server. When that is finished, remove the second drive from the Syno and add it as a mirror disk to the server.

Ps. Make sure you have a backup of your important data, since you will be messing around with it a little when performing these actions.

Thanks webbier, that's what I was hoping to hear. I'm making a backup of the array now, and will attempt to move the drives over once that's complete.
