G.Skill 3x4GB RL Series F3 1600MHz rated 1.5v is it ok to run at 1.65v

I have been running my G.Skill 3x4GB RL Series F3 1600MHz @ CAS8 without problem @ v1.65 by mistake as it is rated for use at v1.5.

Now I've corrected it is absolutely fine at v1.5 so no harm done I guess and got me wondering where is the benefit of v1.5, or it just an ECO thing?

Better question is... what's the benefit of running at higher than necessary voltages? Nothing.

What's the downside of running at higher than necessary voltages? More heat, more power consumption, faster wear.


(and you mean 1.65v or 1.5v.... not v1.65. wink.gif )

Good points and I've corrected that v thing in my rig details. See you have Ripjaws as well, great memory at a great price when I purchased it. Out of interest what core/qpi voltages do you put through the 920 for 4.28Ghz? I've been thinking of pushing my 930 given I'm not tempted by Haswell.

Honestly, I don't remember since it has been years but all in the safe limits. That 930 should easily hit 4.1GHz though.

Most DDR3 have a general operating range of 1.50V-1.65V. It just depends whether you want to run on the higher end, or lower end. Either way is no big deal. Many people have run 1.65V for the lifetime of their system and have had no issues. Sounds like you have them at good settings, so just leave as is and it'll be fine.

Stock is 1.5v and he's not overclocking them so why not run them at stock?

I misread what he said. Yea, if the memory is stable at DDR3-1600 CL8 1.50V, then leave it at that!

DRAM Voltage boost is only needed for overclocking frequency or lowering timings.
