Samsung 850 Pro?

Thread Starter
I've been wondering why we haven't heard anything about a Samsung 840 Pro successor. With only a few months till september and october, it's strange we haven't heard anything about the new "850"

Samsung 830: September 2011
Samsung 840: October 2012
Samsung 850: End of 2013?

I'm wondering only because I've been eyeing the 512GB 840 Pro and I can pick one up on Amazon's open warehouse deals for like $420. Having complete faith in Amazon's products and return policy, that's a deal hard to beat. I'd be willing to pony up an additional $100 for a new 850 but if they're release at like $600+ then I think that'd be too much for me.

Pick up a 512G 840 Pro even though it's near its EOL or wait a few months for a new 850 Pro?

EDIT: I'm still using one of those original Vertex 3 240GB SSD's. I know when compared to the 840 pro, 4K is greatly improved as well as write speeds. Any thoughts on if its an appreciable, however small, difference?

Waiting for the 850 pro will be longer than expected. Also you will have to wait for the benchmark results and reviews, and never buy the 1st partition made products. Always wait some weeks-months . If you cant wait go ahead for the 840 PRO its an awesome ssd. I own 2 128gb pro in raid 0 .. and damn thats fast!

The 830 and 840 were both 20nm nand. The next step would be 14-16nm (1x nm). It sounded like we were to see 16nm SSD's by the end of 2013. If that's true, we might see a 1x nm 850 pro?

To be more accurate, Samsung 830 is 27nm Toggle. Samsung 840 is 21nm Toggle.

Well, there may be a Samsung 850 SSD line, but Samsung has something else in store for us:

https://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/news-events/press-releases/detail?newsId=12921

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/display/20130617124019_Samsung_Reveals_Ultra_Fast_PCI_Express_SSD_for_Ultra_Slim_Notebook_PCs.html

Frankly, I can't see purchasing an upgrade SATA 6Gb/s SSD (unless you don't have a SSD or two) when SSDs like this are coming, as well as the SATA Express standard for SSDs, and products using that standard.

The future of storage is fast... and small.

I can think of one reason: if you want a bigger SSD for your current system. NGFF/m.2 would require a new build or a PCIe adapter. It's also likely to carry a price premium, at least initially.

That said, this is certainly great for new tablets, ultrabooks and notebooks supporting the m.2 standard. *sigh* Just wish manufacturers would make storage in Windows 8 tablets and ultrabooks user-serviceable for easy upgrades.

I also own an Original OCZ Vertex 3 hard drive, but I am undecided on the upgrade.

Shall I wait for 850 pro or just go and buy the 840 pro
