Whose the moron here?

This debate about studio monitors has been going on for 3 months now.

Friend 1: You can't use studio monitors outside a studio environment. They're meant solely for production and everyday use with them wouldn't garner good results. It only highlights certain parts of the song and doesn't give a good representation of the song as a whole. There are MUCH better headphones for everyday listening than studio monitors.

Friend 2: Studio monitors are perfect for everyday listening. They capture every morsel of sound in the production and let you hear the music the way it was meant to be heard. If you hook them to a good amp or sound source, studio monitors will blow any other headphone out of the water. They're the BEST way to listen to music.

Whose right?

I would have to side with friend 2 here, since I also use monitors for normal use too biggrin.gif.

Please don't hate me, but the contraction of "who is," is "who's." I felt I had to mention it since the title seemed to be insulting someones intelligence.

I have some Alesis studio monitors (for analog signals) and they are perfect for everyday listening. I also have some Genelec monitors (using them for digital signals) and they are great as well.

I am not sure where friend 1 gets this statement from "It only highlights certain parts of the song and doesn't give a good representation of the song as a whole.", but with my monitors it is not true.

Evidently I did. I'll duck out now.

(I vote friend 2, but I have only listened to real monitors in a studio environment so my knowledge is a bit limited)

Edit: However, I have never heard studio monitors scale well with volume, so if you need to crank it for whatever reason, get something more robust.

Hifi speackers vs Monitoring speackers who wins in audio quality and fidelity ?

Adam and Dynamaudio are very serious contender in monitoring speackers are they better in audio restitution than best hifi brands like B&W, Focal, Klipsh ?

The thing with studio monitors is that they are (or should be) as transparent as possible. I prefer this myself, but music is often mastered with other sound systems in mind. Most home systems add a lot of low end, either naturally or because people don't know what to do with an equaliser and just turn up the bass as far as it will go. To compensate for this, the lower end of the sound spectrum in recordings is often dialed down, so if you listen to the recording on studio monitors you may hear the music as it is recorded, but not necessarily as it was intended to be heard.
I'm just using the low end as an example, but the bottom line is that as with so many other things, this boils down to personal preference. Personally I like a transparent sound so I can hear everything clearly, but a lot of people just want as much bass as possible before it starts distorting. There are no morons here, although I do wonder what exactly friend 1 means with "highlighting certain parts of the song". The point of studio monitors is that no part is highlighted above the rest and everything is heard clearly.
