Provided you have the temperatures under control, yes it is fine. I know the architecture is different but the materials are the same; my 7970 stock voltage is 1.2v and under load it doesn't go over 75C.
Im doing the same ATM, as I recently picked up a used EVGA FPB gtx460 (decent 2 heatpipe cooler IMHO)
Running fine @ 60% fan ~70*C (in high ambients) with 1.12v @ 875 core with maxed (in afterburner) 2340 mem clock, 900 core @ 1.25 isnt crashing, but I do see artifacts
I would stick with GPU stress test personally, Burn-in
just sounds like trouble.
Check out the club, plenty of user overclock info there:

man MSI K doesn't indicate crap, i thought the GPU was stable @ 1.10 but it failed to run a benchmark test of Grid 2, i had to up the voltage to 1.15 for the benchmark to finish successfully

every game i tried after a 15 min of Kombuster failed within seconds of gameplay, i had to increase the voltage from 1.10 to 1.15 to stabilize 900Mhz core speed
This I would run Kombuster to get an idea of the max temp, but heaven/valley and 3Dmark will be much better tester of stability. Personally I find Valley is the best one.
update: ok..the max i can push with the stock cooler is 870Mhz @ 1.087
