College laptop

Thread Starter
What is your maximum budget? Maximum: $1000 - The cheaper the better, I'm willing to sacrifice performance for a noticeable price drop

What country are you in? U.S.

What will be the uses of this laptop? Programming (C and it's variants, Java, HTML, Python) Light - Medium Gaming, Small Rendering, Modeling, Image Editing,

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? Anything is good. (This is for College, thus places that offer discounts for students would help with the cost)

What screen size do you require? At least 15 inch.

What screen resolution do you require? At least 1920x1080

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? Any

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) At least 2 hours.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? TeamFortress 2,

What operating system do you need? (if any) Windows 7 to Windows 8

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) Any style is fine.

How much hard drive space do you need? Any (Will be upgrading to SSD)

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) Must have Ethernet and Wireless

Is there anything else we need to know? Linux hardware compatibility is a plus, but not a necessity. (I'll be checking on this regardless, however.) A second slot for a hard drive would be very nice to have.

Thank you, for your help!

http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-intel-4th-generation-mobile-haswell-processors-ct-95_51_421.html

Those are some powerful machines around $1000.

It is hard to find a 15+" laptop with 1080p screen under $750. Most begin around there and only go up.

I have had personal experience with ASUS N56 series and they are very nice looking laptops with quality feel and great screen.

That HP looks nice, but I have vowed to never purchase an HP laptop again. They may have become better since, but do your research.

never HP.

I bought an HP 4 years ago for high school and the thing is the most poorly-planned laptop I have every owned.
All the heat-producing parts are located on the left side of the laptop, and so while the right side is cool, resting my palm for about 30 seconds on the left side means that it'll start sweating, and touching the bottom or the keyboard near the vent means burning your finger -_-

That's absolutely unacceptable; I will never again put up with HP's shoddy design team.
