Yeah I have a Laptop and 250gb external hdd so could also use those to transfer stuff over from discs. So far looks like my optical drive wont be needed at all smile.gif Think I'll give it to my bro with my current case when I update

i have not built a system WITH an optical drive installed for over a decade biggrin.gif

as you said. the ONLY time you'd use an optical drive is when installing the OS... everything else is downloaded from the net because that's how you get the latest versions of everything. ALL modern mobo support booting directly from USB. so just salvage an old ODD and put it inside an external USB enclosure and keep that in the desk drawer till the next time you decide to reinstall your OS... biggrin.gif

My sig rig didnt have a Optical drive in it for a year and a half, when I really needed to use a disk (like to install windows) I just made my flash drive bootable and did it off of that. One day when I was ordering parts for a buddies rig he had me order 2 optical drives so I could throw one in my rig. So i did, and in the last year I have had it I used it twice.

1. Burned a DVD with Iron man on it

2. Burned a Audio CD for my father in law.

It is very easy to get by without a dvd drive, I only have one in the first place on the whim of my buddy and I wouldn't miss it if it were gone again. Pretty much everything is either digital now, or can be made digital.

While many people no longer need an optical drive anymore (and it makes perfect sense for them to not have one in their machines), I still do. Much of the music I buy is available only on CD and I need the drive to rip them to my computer. Even music I can download is often poorly tagged and can require hours of research to "fill in the blanks". It's often just easier to buy the CD rip it since I can easily get the information for tagging the files from the liner notes (I also scan the liner notes). I also get a higher quality rip than the files often available for download.

Movies are often cheaper to buy on DVD or even Blu-ray. Wally World usually has a big display tub filled with $5 DVDs and even Blu-rays. There are many movies that aren't available for download.

I need an optical drive often enough it's far more convenient for me to have it installed in the machine instead of keeping an external drive knocking about.

You don't really need it anymore if you don't rip or burn things.
Even if you did, you could buy an external one as said, they're cheap.

Also you don't need to use the discs for installing your OS, you can get the the ROM of the version you have and install it from a flash drive.
