I think I've got a dead PCIe x16 slot.... :-(

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I ordered a second GTX 480 for SLI purposes in my main machine. Unfortunately, installation proved a failure. With both cards in, Windows only sees the one in the PCIe x16 slot nearest the CPU

-I have tested my primary and working GTX 480 in the second PCIe x16 slot
-I have tested my new GTX 480 in the second PCIe x16 slot
-I have tested a PCIe x1 USB 3.0 card in the second PCIe x16 slot

None of these devices power up or are visible in windows. All work in the first PCIe x16 slot.

My board is a Gigabyte GA-Z68-UD3-B3. BIOS is on default settings but I've cleared CMOS and stuff too.

frown.gif I'm pretty sure it's a dead slot. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Pretty rare for a PCI-E slot to die. The PCI-E lanes are controlled by .... drumroll.... the CPU on Sandy Bridge and newer Intel processors. So remove the CPU, check for any bent pins in the CPU socket and carefully correct them if necessary, and then carefully re-install the processor and heatsink. Another random thing is try flashing the BIOS to the latest available.
