Dont use it for SLI unless you are running quad sli, dont run tri or quad sli unless you are on E series chips.

Sorry, I was under the impression it switched like alternated between lanes, not switch like it can distribute available lanes where needed. I did some outside reading on some speculation and it makes more sense now (if that is indeed how it works).

Motherboards with chips to add more lanes are to allow the SLI/CF transfers directly between the GPUs to get more bandwidth. That's why on multi PCIE slot mobos certified for SLI or CF you might find this type of chip.

Data for rendering a frame is first sent from the CPU to the GPU over the limited number of lanes the CPU supports. The frame is rendered, and about midway through, the next GPU (in the SLI/CF config) finishes an earlier frame and starts work on the next frame. This next frame may have a reliance on data rendered on the GPU from the previous frame to be there on this frame, because the rendering of the game was designed to assume it would all take place on a single GPU where you wouldn't have this problem.

So the driver tells the GPUs to transfer it between themselves so that it is present on both GPUs. The extra bandwidth of those extra lanes here makes this faster and prevents as much of a performance hit when these transfers happen. That said, some or many transfers must go through Host, which is the CPU, in which case these extra lanes don't help perf at all.

In short, the chips that give extra lanes on motherboards do not benefit single GPU or multi GPU configs that do not require the GPUs to talk directly (I.e. configs other than SLI or CF)
