Samsung Magician software on Windows 8 question (is it needed?)

Thread Starter
I have a Samsung 830 256GB SSD, I have been using the manual Trim function on Windows 8 (Optimize SSD under disk defrag) and I have been doing this for months and I am wondering if this is a replacement for the Samsung Magician software because I havent been using the Samsung Magician software at all since I got Windows 8.

I guess my question is:

Is it important to use the Samsung Magician software when you have windows 8 and the manual optimize SSD option built into the OS?

Or should I be using the Samsung Magician software to do all this? ( I dont even have that installed on my PC)

I ask this because I have been doing this for this whole year so far and I am getting an Intel 525 drive next week for my new laptop and I want to know if I am doing the right thing. (Do I need to use the Intel software for their SSD's on windows 8?)

Thanks!

Short answer, no, you do not Need the Magician software, it is not essential for your 830 SSD.

Is it nice to have for its features that may be used occasionally, rarely, or once or twice? IMO, yes.

Is the Magician manual TRIM function better than Windows 8's Optimize TRIM function? Or vice versa? Who knows, has that been tested, and how would that be tested? Do either of these work better or worse than the standard TRIM support in Windows 7 and 8? Again, who knows?

Same for the Intel SSD software, I use both occasionally. The few MB each uses doesn't bother me.

Well, you don't even have a Sammy SSD now, do you? tongue.gif You could tune your OS the Samsung way with it. The old version would install some kind of driver for the Intel chipset, very curious, I never found any discussion about it.

eek.gif You second guess my ownership of my Samsung 830 128GB! How dare you! tongue.gif

Yea i have one on my laptop. biggrin.gif

I honestly have a strong dislike of the "optimization" settings it does and rather setting my system my way. Why would you want to disable windows search? it just baffles me. lol

OMG, what have I done... oh wait, a laptop... does that count? wink.gif

I thought your collection of... pre-owned SSDs wasn't that big. rolleyes.gif

That Sammy OS optimizer does quite a few things, even creates its own Windows Power Plan. Not that we couldn't do that, we can.

The Sammy SE program for Win 8, via a DOS boot worked fine for me, once the fonts were set. Gotta have Magician to create it, but more than one way to SE.

ALL my SSDs except for the one in my dad's PC are pre-owned lol. I never buy new PC parts now. Used is so much better. biggrin.gif

I need to play with that SE feature one day.

I have a Samsung SSD on Windows 7, assuming it's the same as windows 8, I don't really find any need for it at all, though you might want to install the firmware but thats about it.
