Transfering 2 HDDs in RAID 1 from a rig to another

Thread Starter
I need to transfer 2 HDDs that are configured in RAID 1 to another rig. Will the 2 HDDs still work in RAID?
if you are using on board raid then no
if you are using a raid card then more than likely
but before you take them out of raid BE SURE TO BREAK THE RAID ARRAY with the board raid bios
Because the HHD are write protected making it almost impossible to format them in any thing but the original raid bios that protected them.
I managed to format 3 out of 4 drives in raid 0 after selling the motherboard I gave up on the 4th it is very hard to near impossible to format a write protected HHD.

you need to fill out your sig thumb.gif

Will likely be a pain

I would suggest trying another way... what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

I'm trying to migrate my data (which is in RAID 1) from an older computer to another.

What RAID controller are you using? I am assuming the host-based controller that is part of the chipset?

If so, are you doing an Intel to an Intel or AMD to an AMD? If so, it should work since the RAID metadata is the same.
Once again...

Sorry I should have clarified earlier, it is the RAID controller on the motherboard. And I'm transferring from an Intel to an Intel.

Can I just plug both HDDs into the SATA ports and run the new RAID controller and it will work?

You can. I did this with my RAID 5. Went from my old Q6600 P45 chipset to a 2500k and a P67 chipset (the SB is what controls RAID on both boards).

I just enabled RAID in bios, saved changes and restarted. BOOM! RAID was back in business.

I would have to say just give it a go I tried once I didn't succeed.
But I didn't try that hard either, because I really didn't need a raid 1 operating system and decided to run raid 0 with the two HHD then 4 later on until SSD became affordable.
