IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB.

Yes, Conservatives hate the phenomenon that is known as 'Affirmative Action' in the US. We all get the point.

Obviously, there are people on the other side of the POLITICAL spectrum that think it's a good idea, otherwise, it wouldn't exist. This is a POLITICAL battle that's been raging since the 60's.

Now ... being that 'Politics' are not allowed, and the topic of this thread is not 'Affirmative Action: Good or Bad', and there's not even any reason to suspect that AA was involved in this woman's hire ... my suggestion is that EVERYONE checks their political commentary at the proverbial door.

Thanks!

PS: The only reason I didn't remove the quoted post was so I could use it to illustrate a point. Everyone take note: the subject of Affirmative Action qualifies as prohibited 'political' discussion on OCN.

Don't quote that bullcrap. I ran payroll before and a lot of women got paid higher than their male counterparts.

I once got grilled for asking about it especially when the employees in question were some of the lower performers in the company. (yes performance does matter)

This bullcrap of 75 cents on the dollar I've never seen in the professional world. This is 2013 not 1960. I am wondering sometimes where they get this statistical data what companies? NO COMPANY I have ever worked for paid women less than their male counterparts. Ironically USUALLY the opposite was true. I remember being a supervisor and seeing 3 women being paid more than me and I was their supervisor! I asked if I was bad at my job to the administration and they said I was not. I asked why they were paid more than me and I was informed that women typically asked for money and got it because the company was terrified of being sued for discrimination.

She's a woman (golf clap) so is my mother, my mother went into a field dominated by men (law) and is now the most successful person in the United States in her field. She started in 1989 and never once cried about gender and played by the same rules as the boys. She made as much or more than them and never acted like she had to prove herself.

I don't care if this woman is a woman. I care is she going to sink xbox? I will say this, she has to be better than Ballmer or Mattrick. That really isn't saying an awful lot.

It's not sexism. Men function primarily on logic and women mainly on emotion it's a well known fact. This doesn't mean that either is better than the other. But it does mean that women are more likely to have their decisions influenced by their emotion because of how we evolved as a species. I feel like any man who's not a virgin knows this well by now from first hand experiences.

I can dig up scientific studies performed by mapping the brain and stimulating test subjects to produce cold hard undeniable differences between the two sexes. But this is not the right topic for that.

Saying a woman can lead the country better than a man, is sexist. But when sexism is directed towards a man no one gives a damn lol no one even called that out but me.

"Feminism is the idea that we can make both sexes equal by focusing solely on the issues of one of them."

Forcing companies to hire a specific sex is sexist e.g. If the male has higher qualifications than the female and the female is hired just because the company has to fill a quota enforced by the government, is that equality?

I'm not dismissing sexism in the workplace directed at both male and female workers and students, my first post in this thread is one example of the latter however sexism is not the reason but a factor (A diminishing one) as to why there are not as many women as men in high ranking positions.

This is a small point however it was the most relevant to the current thread and the point that was raised in the thread. There are many other aspects that influence the amount of females in high ranking positions.

@darkpriest : So stats are wrong, but an anecdotal experience is right? This covers both sides: http://www.payscale.com/career-news/2007/04/men_vs_women_sa FWIW I worked in tech, music, and journalism in LA , now NY and as a male I found that talking with many of the females were making less than their male counterparts. All my age range (20-30), some with better degrees.

@scorpion : Nice fact based response there. Like I said before, please look up "mansplain" "male privilege" and "white privilege". Empathy is a great thing to have.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brain-myths/201207/two-myths-and-three-facts-about-the-differences-in-men-and-womens-brains
Quote:
It’s tempting to see the brain differences between the sexes, mythical or otherwise, and think that they explain behavioural differences; such as men’s milk amnesia, their superiority on mental rotation tasks or women’s advantage with emotional processing. In fact, in many cases we simply don’t know the implications of the sex-related brain differences. It’s even possible that brain differences are responsible for behavioural similarities between the sexes. This is known as the “compensation theory” and it could explain why men and women’s performance on various tasks is similar even whilst they show different patterns of brain activity. Bearing this in mind, readers should treat with extreme scepticism those evangelists who draw on supposed sex-related brain differences to support their claims about the need for gendered educational practices.

It’s also important to remember that behavioural differences between the sexes are rarely as fixed as is often made out in the media. Cultural expectations and pressures play a big part. For instance, telling women that their sex is inferior at mental rotation tends to provoke poor performance; giving them empowering information, by contrast, tends to nullify any sex differences. Related to this, in countries that subscribe less strongly to gender-stereotyped beliefs about ability, women tend to perform better at science. These kind of findings remind us that over-simplifying and over-generalising findings about gender differences risks setting up vicious self-fulfilling prophesies, so that men and women come to resemble unfounded stereotypes.
Also if you open that link their statements link to the various studies attributed to those statements.

@Razor : In an ideal world this would be great, right? However even within males it's not a meritocracy. It goes by "cultural fit" or "connections" or "intangibles". The "best" can mean a variety things, based on the context. If a company is painfully out of touch, hiring someone younger, or female, or a minority, might be the "best" choice, or they might be the best qualified to fill that need. It's not something you can quantify. I mean who do you hire - a guy that has a 4.0 from Yale or a guy with a 4.0 from Stanford or a guy with a 4.0 from Princeton? What if the guy that's already been a CEO ran the company into the ground? Technically, he's the "proven" candidate with more experience. A lot of things to consider.

Seriously about the title? In other news, my mother is a woman! So is my wife! Shock-horror! I am curious if she will be paid the same as the man before her.

I don't really care about this persons gender either, and I don't think any woman, getting any job, any where, has anything to do with her rights (as long as it is performance based and she deserves the position).

And with that, her pay should be base on what she is willing to work for and what the company is willing to pay, not what someone else paid someone else.

Semi-Off Topic: If my last name was Mattricks, I would name my kid Dot. biggrin.gif

@mylilpony look up feminism, female privilege, and white privilege.

Links proving my theory:
1
2
3

Also feel free to read examples of just how privileged women are in the legal system here

One example I really liked was about a retired fella who caught his wife cheating. They divorced and he was forced by law to pay alimony for her child that wasn't even his. He had to return to the workforce to support another man's child.

Or the one where a woman sexually abused an 8 year old child that she was babysitting and got 2 years in jail ONLY because she started crying in the courtroom.

Also, false rape accusations are on the rise. Source
