I don't recall where I read that but if I recall correctly, the current gen was stretched so thin mainly because of poor planning. Back when 05-06 when they game out, may things were totally new to console gaming and very hard to predict. This gen for consoles introduced DLC's on a grand scale, Wifi, multimedia content, apps, HD's, motion controls and many different things. I know they existed before that but not on such an integrated level, mostly as accessories or even test products.
The poor planning is especially obvious when you see the old PS3 and Xbox 360 models that were out early on. They thought back then 20GB would be enough(when single games can be close twice that size now) and it costed a fortune to implement all these brand new features such as Blu-Ray and built-in Wifi. As per this article
, Microsoft was losing 126$ for every Xbox 360 sold during the release. It was even worse for Sony. All these new technologies were firsts for the consoles and nobody knew how they would unfold. Hell, even the media format was still uncertain. HD DVD and Blu-Ray were still waging war at that time. Now we're seeing games that are entirely downloadable and it obvious it's the future for selling entertainment media.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that the reason this gen lasted close to 10 years for the Xbox 360(twice the average of a normal gen-length) was because of the complete revolution of new technologies implemented in the current-gen. Many things were uncertain, builds were being revised, consoles remade and DLC's have a lot to do with prolonging consoles life-span. Some analysts claim the next gen won't last 8-9 years but will be back to the 4-6 years we've always been used to. Mind you, some also say the PS4 will carry on all the way to 2024 and beyond but those are the minority from what I know.
If you look at the PS4 and Xbox One, they don't really introduce anything really new or groundbreaking. They simply upgrade what was already in the last gen. That's why I also believe they won't last for 9 years. I see them lasting around 5 years.Edited by Juub - 7/15/13 at 8:27pm
