What has burned then if my TIM is none electrically conductive and none of thse gpu die capacitors have burned?

Is it worth me even trying this gpu again in my rig or should I not bother risking it?
I would not risk it. I had a issue on my VTX3D 7950 where for some reason the VRM1 had burned out. Fried my Asrock 970 Extreme3 MB. Firstly I thought that the MB was the issue, then plugged it into a 7 year old AM2 motherboard, fried that too. (Glad it was worth nothing) Then finally I opened the GPU cooler, and saw the VRM1 burnmarks. Then RMA'd my GPU, got my money back. I suggest you to try RMA that GPU and hope for the best. The coincidences on a damaged component is really not worth it. Never know what will happen..
Also, RMA'd the MB too, and it worked. Got a new one with a new updated BIOS (gave it away to my friend though)

The easiest way to tell if you need a shim is to look at the stock cooler and see if there is a raised area where the die is.

If you need one, you can use a fin from an old solid copper cooler, just put TIM on both sides. Ive actually had to make a stack of copper sheets to close a gap on a bad laptop cooler, worked fine.

Yes, stock AMD mounting bracket, drilled new holes to match the holes of the GPU PCB. Used mounting with stock screws/thumbnails. Everything stock, except the 2 machine nuts (purchased from local hardware store)

I have a similar problem to this, attached a h80 to my 7870. it booted fine but had major artifacts and would crash(pc Shut down) before any stress test could complete, i had temps monitored whilst this was happening and the temps where fine, but it just shut down, i was confused. got told to use a shim, that didnt help atall, attached the shim same problem, reapplied it a few times with no sucsess, then it worked for one stress test, great temps and i was happy, put my pc back together put the side on an tried it again and the temps spiked to 90C as soon as i tried anything. Ended up just putting the stock cooler back on :/ i dont think its possible to zip tie the square coolers to a 7870 :/ im just waiting for dwood to catch up on his orders b4 i even try the mod again :/

I clearly needed one (a shim) and stupidly didnt trust my instinct and went without one.

I think I might be done with folding, costs too much money when parts start failing like this.

Wait wait wait... Did you cool anything else on the board... like the VRM's for example?
