Upgrade Suggestions for Gaming

Thread Starter
I am considering upgrading my processor within the next few weeks to put a bit more power into the computer. I mostly game and do not intent to OC... yet. Right now I'm just trying to get a bit more power out of games like Planetside 2 and Battlefield 3, but my main goal will be for Star Citizen which releases in Nov 2014.

Is it a good time to upgrade my entire system now?
Thinking i5-4670k for OC later on.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1fDtp

Or should just go for the CPU (mobo, ram) now and the GPU later?

Thanks for the suggestions.

First, what is your system now? Second, that's NOT an overclocking motherboard, for that you'll want a z87 chipset.....teaching.gif

I wouldn't worry about upgrading for a game that is not due to be released for more than a year. By then at least two more generations of cpu's will have been released. If you are unsatisfied with the performance you are having at this time then upgrade now. Do your research and see what will be coming out in the coming months and plan accordingly. This will give you more time to save. You must understand that computer parts are obsolete as soon as they hit the shelves. something bigger and better is always on the horizen so be happy with your choices unless you can afford constant upgrades.

^^What he said, If it's just for gaming, I think you would have a better increase just getting the gtx 760. You're not going to see as big a difference from upgrading cpu/mobo. If you want to upgrade those for a game next year, wait for the next socket/chipset, it's not far away. What I guess I'm saying is - I wouldn't bother upgrading whole rig for gaming without getting a new gpu with it/first. And just so you know, there's been price drops on the 600 series, can get a gtx 680 for under $400. I always get higher end gpu's they last much longer playability wise. 2cents.gif

i know you said you won't overclock but you can still squeeze out a ton of performance with that QX6700 (my memory is failing me atm. can't seem to remember the overclocks I had with my q6600) I had a single gtx 480 for the longest time (upgraded from two 8800 Ultras) with my q6660 and not once did I feel I was getting held back by my cpu.

IMO, not that many demanding games are coming out in 2013. Only one I can think of is BF4 and Watchdogs. Personally, I would try and SLI your 480's and hold out till Star Citizen, by then well have new stuff by AMD,Nvidia and intel. For all we know, Star Citizen could be delayed. The benefit of waiting will be to see how "next gen" games utilize multiple cores. If they do, AMD may be the better CPU upgrade in the future. Also, AMD likes to give games away for free so that would be another bonus lol.

I agree with this. The QX6700 should be able to do around 3.5ghz without much trouble. Try overclocking and see how much extra performance you get. If you want to upgrade then i would suggest upgrading everything at the same time as with a new cpu you will be held back by your gpu but with a new gpu you will probably be held back by your cpu.
