1) this is a legal thing to let the pro-gamers get visas, paid and access as they should. Not the olympic committee doing anything etc.

2) pro-gaming isn't eating doritos and playing skyrim to relax. Perhaps the guys thinking it is should look into pro SC2 for example.

EXACTLY HOLY CRAP someone gets it..... PROFESSIONAL BOWLING ISN"T GOING OUT WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND AND DRINKING PEPSI AND EATING PIZZA EITHER.

Next year the government will declare people who watch television for hours, laying on the couch and stuffing their face with pizza, Doritos and beer... athletes. It takes a lot of stamina and mental acuity to lay there and focus on the screen while stuffing your face... doesn't it? That must be skill? Right? Think of the years of training... Not too far from video gaming, really, if you think about it.

Quit mixing up Pro vs Regular please. Read above.

The fact is we as individuals dont determine athletes but those that are willing to support it (the crowd)

If no one gave a hoot about football then there would not be football

Most people confuse athletes and athletics. Yes, athletes participate in athletics, but the definition of an athlete, which most people against this new classification, would be agreed with classifying e-sports' competitors as professional athletes. English might be difficult but dictionaries are great tools to use when you look at how things are classified (legally).

ath·lete [ath-leet] Show IPA
noun
a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.

Source

If anyone has any further confusions, please look at the connection of an e-sport to 'physical agility', 'stamina', or 'strength'. Also understand 'or', as it does not pertain to 'and', making them independent of each other. Like, come on, I might be in engineering, but this is basic crap. Athletes do not need to be athletic, but there are athletes that do participate in athletic sports.

Gezz... people arguing over synthetics while not understanding the basics to definitions.

Trololol, I can be fat, not shaved, sit at a table for hours on end doing nothing but mental things in my head and I'm a professional athlete that no one questions my ability as a professional because I'm on TV and more people accept me because it's more of an "adult thing"

The guys below me, there no way professional gamers LOL professional? all they do is sit at a table and compete against other players for money on a level higher then standard..

oh wait?

no disrespect to Matt Salsberg hes an amazing poker player, really funny to watch

Well tbh it does not matter if people swear gaming is a sport and gamers are "athletes" nobody will take them seriously as "athletes" that's like calling the TSA police officers xD. Putting that aside I believe is good business and for gaming to get recognition, and if it can help foreign gamers get visas that's a good as well thumb.gif

Freakin' hilarious! lachen.gif If the U.S. government wants to categorize gamers as athletes, thats fine, except I would insert the word ' coach' infront of athlete.

OT: I will gladly admit progamers are very skilled at what they do (skills I envy). I just don't personally prefer the word 'athlete' associated with them.

I agree that the whole team thing is tremendously important. In any environment, doing what you do for your team and not necessarily yourself is very taxing both physically and mentally (and sometimes financially). Team events should always be looked upon and treated with respect (unless its some kind of pedophile team).

that being said, if this change is really focused on people getting visas then Im all for it. If its for changing the definition of athlete for a reason that doesnt actually help people then, kill it with fire.

But ive got to ask, if they are athletes, do they go through drug testing?
