Around 80-90% of the worlds electricity comes from coal. Its cheap and abundant, and power plants are cheap to build and maintain. In the US and Europe, efforts have been taken to control pullution, such as filtering out the soot, but not much has been done to control the release of mercury, which is causing much bigger issues than lead (such as contaminating our seafood supply).

Just my opinion that more could be done by not sacrificing energy efficiency in the name of performance.

The US is the Saudia Arabia of coal. We are sitting on so much of that stuff that we're trying to come up with ingenious ways to utilize it, such as CTL (Coal to Liquid) technology which liquifies coal to use as fuel for cars and planes.

Major coal mining companies in the United States, which has more coal reserves than Saudi Arabia has oil, are investing in ways to develop fuels derived from carbon.

Funny thing too, Colorado alone is sitting on more oil than the entire Middle East, but its in the form of oil shale, so its too expensive to produce right now.

Hmm seems Intel has already done the same http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116013

Its the RoHS version, so that means they would have had to remove any lead components for it to it to comply with the RoHS directive. Too bad its a Prescott though.

Good job AMD, at least you are moving to a cleaner world.

If I wanted to feel good about buying a CPU for the environment, I'd buy an VIA chip.

http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives..._computing.jsp

They figured out how much power one of their CPUs uses for the next three years with the end user, and they plant x number of trees to fight with the amount of CO2 released while powering those CPUs.
