WD Blue or Black for gaming?

Thread Starter
Hi, recently I built a computer only with an ssd (250gb) thinking it would be enough, turns out it wasnt, so I was thinking of buying a new hard drive though I can't fit it in my case anywhere, so I was going to buy on and put it in an esata enclosure (my board has esata connectivity) now, esata runs at 3gbps so i'm not going to be getting complete speed out of them, but primarily, I'll just be using this drive to stall or my games on, so which would benefit me more? Thanks

Mechanical drives transfer far less than the 3 gbps esata link will facilitate, you won't notice a difference.

I'd probably go with one of the 1 TB/platter Blue drives.

I don't think so. Not far less but not far off either
Black 1TB (WD1002FAEX) is slower than Blue 1TB (WD10EZEX) when it comes to sequential read speed but the WD1002FAEX has higher IOPS which ... sometimes could be better for some games but not really that much of a difference
OP, i'll let you decide if 50% more IOPS is worth the 20$ and the drop in sequential read speed
But IMO it's not worth the 20$ if you are tight for cash, in my town it's like 40$ apart

Neither, an SSD tongue.gif

If you have a small game collection, a 128 GB SSD will do the trick. All of your media and video can go onto a traditional hard drive. Load times for applications are non-existent, and maps/levels in games load faster as well. No frame rate improvement, though.

Eh, the black is the faster drive.

I already use an ssd for my games, and 3 quarters of it is full of games with barely any media whatsoever, the speeds are nice, but I'd prefer a larger capacity due to the fact I have quite an excessive amount of games
