What are my options to get full 5.1 Surround in my scenario?

Thread Starter

Pulled out the old home stereo from storage for a sound upgrade to my PC and was looking for the best options to get it hooked up to my cheap PC for True 5.1 sound.  Also have a few questions along the way.

Sound System:  Pioneer HTS-GS1 ( http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/Home-Theater-Systems/HTS-GS1 )

Motherboard: N68C-S UCC ( http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/N68C-S%20UCC/ )

Right now I have it hooked up using a basic Analog RCA Red/White cable into the receiver, and the 1/8 jack into my PC LINE OUT port.  Sounds great, but this does not support Surround.  Odd enough, my motherboard shows in its specifications that it supports 5.1 Channel HD Audio.  But how is this so with only a LINE IN, LINE OUT, and MIC?

So I am trying to figure out the best cost effective way to get my full Surround Sound.

Could I somehow make use of my HDMI port on my GT 520 GPU?

Purchasing a sound card?  Would it be better to go Digital Optical or Coaxial?

It looks like your only option is to add digital optical or coaxial to your PC, The lowest-end soundcards typically don't have the 5.1 live encoders (Xonar DG, ect). I *THINK* the cheapest internal soundcard with DTS-Connect or DDLive is the Xonar D1 or similar, I believe the external USB Xonar U3 is one of the cheapest ways to get digital-optical 5.1.
