Best backup solution for my files and programs sought

Thread Starter
I recently upgraded my Phenom II 965 BE on Asus Crosshair IV Formula mobo to Haswell Core i7 4770K on ASRock Z87 Extreme9/AC mobo without having done a clean install of Win 8 Pro 64 bit because I have tons of software that I purchased as downloads and don't want to spend the next four weekends begging the software publishers for activation codes, etc. If I hadn't invested $260 in various CyberLink software I'd walk away; re-downloading their software is more painful than crawling over a mile of broken glass. And I have 60 games on Steam, too.

I'd like advice on how to backup my software before a clean install of Win 8. I'm worried that cruft from my old Asus drivers are still embedded in DLL's and registry and whether I'll have the same quirkiness I'm suffering from. I would be grateful for your advice. Thank you.

Well, my preference is to just do a wipe/reinstall in those cases and install programs as needed. I find it's nice to have a fresh start and clean file system.

However, I don't understand why you couldn't simply install windows as an upgrade if you want to keep programs and content.

It really sounds like you don't want a "clean" install of Win 8...
