Delidding a 3770K - Why didn't I do it a long time ago?

Thread Starter
With so much encouraging information available I finally decided to give delidding a go after getting a water cooling setup for my SLI Titans. My i7 3770K ended up getting a block too but the WC was for the Titan's.

I did not reapply the lid. I removed the retention bracket (re-installing the bolts with plastic washers), put some AS5 on the back of the core, and tightened down my water block until the system booted, this was quite tight. eek.gif

I used the razor blade+small hammer technique, it went well and the entire process was much easier than I expected. Lots of small taps, keeping the razor blade flat against the PCB.

I am getting ~30C lower max temperatures when running prime95.

I was also able to get another 100MHz overclock, from 4.7GHz@1.30V 95°C max to 4.8GHz@1.30V 65°C max with the water at 33°C.

Thanks for all the work put in and information in this forum! It took me 45 minutes total and I felt like I knew what I was doing the entire time. smile.gif

It looks like I might get better results with one of the newer HS compounds? Any suggestions? I don't really want to remount the water block unless I would get a benefit as I don't want to crack the core.

Edit: Oops I am measuring 65°C instead of 75°C, I edited the post.
