Can't get 4670K past 4.4 Ghz - any ideas?

Thread Starter
I've run into a roadblock with my new 4670K, running on a Gigabyte Z87 motherboard.

I can get the overclock stable at 4.4 GHz, but the lowest voltage I can get down to is 1.275, which seems a bit high for such a modest overclock.

I can get my computer to boot into windows at 4.5 GHz, but only if I take the voltage past 1.3. Any voltage below that leads to a BSOD before Windows even loads. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me get it stable at 4.5 GHz. Using AIDA64, I can tax it for less than a minute before getting BSOD. But, the odd thing is that my CPU temps never get above 65 degrees. Damn thing should be stable at that temp and voltage!

I am new to Gigabyte motherboards (always was an ASUS guy) and the BIOS is a bit labyrinthine compared to ASUS, so I'm not sure if I'm overlooking something obvious.

Any help would be much appreciated. I just don't want to accept that I have an underperforming CPU...

Setup:
Gigabyte Z87 motherboard
i5 4670K
Corsair h100i
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (not overclocked yet)
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 4GB
Windows 8

Hey man,

Seems like you have a lazy chip, like I do.

Don't be fooled by the temps: try stress testing AIDA64 with only FPU Stress and your temps will soon reach 100C and above, and then the CPU will start throttling.

I am looking myself for what to do to stabilize my chip some more (I have a 4770k) but to no avail.

edit: On a more constructive note, what's your VCCIN? Try 1.95V to 2.0V

You might just need more voltage. They hit a wall and it takes a lot of additional voltage to get past that point - and some chips need 1.35V+ to get to 4.5. You should also manually set you uncore/cache speed to 35 or 36 while you are testing the CPU overclock, to take the cache out of the equation. Once you get the CPU stable then you can try raising the cache speed. You may also want to try raising Vring (try 1.15V) and VCCIOD (try +0.05), especially if you are getting 124 errors (clock watchdog error on Win 8). 101 errors (WHEA uncorrectable) are more likely to be Vcore.
