Questioning my setup performance

post #1 of 98

I finally decided to water cool my box, but I am questioning the temperatures I am getting from the cpu block.
My cpu block is the ek supremacy universal with the installed metal thing optimized for 1366 cpu.

First attempt I was getting horrible temperatures jumping from 70c to 97c stock under prime 95 full load...
-I took of the cpu block and noticed barely any thermal paste on it, seems like bad contact with the cpu.

Second attempt I did my best to screw the mounting bracket and the cooling block and I am getting better temperatures, but still very high.
My overclock is 4.0ghz @ 1.288 vcore I am getting under prime up to 85c
@idle I am sitting around 45ish
@gaming I am at around 65ish

So my question; is it possible that the cpu block is not making good contact or are these temperatures okay for my setup?

My setup:
triple radiator 360 top 40mm in push/pull @ 1850rpm
dual radiator 240 bottom 60mm in push/pull @ 1850rpm
mcp655 pwm @ 60%

Side note: My video card hd 7970 fell around 30 degrees from what I had with the stock cooler. Which is really amazing! It's idle @ 30 and around 42 under load overclocked 1125/1500.

I question the performance because I was using a closed loop system I bought 3 years ago with 1 radiator and pump built into the cpu block and was getting around the same performance, maybe -10%
Seems like a setup worth over $1,500 should do a bit better then some cheap closed loop setup worth $50.

If you have one of the CPUs that have poorly mounted IHS it might need to be delidded.

my 8350 runs hotter then that and I got 25 idle and like 50c max with a 360 and 280 rad , so I think bad contact are maybe bad thermal paste !
but I have been seeing allot of people re moving the IHS off the CPU

Interesting theory, but wouldn't I have had the same problem with the previous cooler?
I have been running this setup for around 3 years.

-Regarding IHS

The smaller threads are for the 2011 from what I read in the instruction manual.
