So I just got a new hard drive for my hp Pavilion DV6z Laptop after the cheap Toshiba one kicked the bucket.
Its an HGST 750 GB running at 7200 RPM with a 16 MB cache.

It will start windows 7 home premium just fine but after a few minutes it will just jump into distorted horizontal stripes and BSOD.

The hard drive is brand spanking new. My father had a similar problem with an older pavilion desktop from 2009 where it did the same exact thing. However my father, at the time had the money to just build an entirely new computer from the ground up.
I don't have such funds right now.

My guesses are the RAM or the video card causing the problem and i'm posting here to see if anyone has had the problem and fixed it without getting an entirely new motherboard with new components.

the attached picture is similar to the problem i am having
