Firmware for 360, more usb/divx formats?

I don't play games on my 360. I only watch media via a usb thumb drive.
While the 360 plays most encoded media, there is an occasional file that it won't play.

I don't keep my 360 connected to the internet as i have no reason to.
I am still using what my friends tell me is the old, better dash board. I think it is two versions ago.

I am just curious as to firmware and updates. Will any of this add more viewable formats for my media?
Is firmware included in the normal Microsoft updates?
Is firmware on a 360 only for the dvd rom and considered hacking/piracy and get your 360 banned?
Is it more risky to use on a 360 than a BD player, tv or computer hardware?

Here is a link that i found that got me curious about the firmware, as i always update it for my computer hardware.

Thanks.

Some of your questions are confusing, but I'll try to answer to my best ability

- No official Microsoft Firmware is not legal. Reading the description of the link you posted it says you can download the firmware from Xbox Live, which is what most people would do, or you can use a CD or USB.

- As long as this isn't some sort of firmware hack, I don't get any indication it is from the Softpedia page

-Yes Firmware is included in Microsoft updates

- Not sure if update will fix your problem, but it wouldn't hurt

- Hacking no, not unless your using unoffical software.

Here a link with supported formats
