There are lots of tools that enable you to creatle bootable usb drives, one of the most popular is universal usb installer.

I have tried unetbootin, something from pendrive linux, a couple others I found randomly online. The computer can see and boot from my 500g western digital usb drive even when I havn't made it bootable, no formating or anything and it shows as a bootable device. But no matter what I've tried it cannot see my 2g sandisc cruzer. The 500g is out to use as it is my backup.

I'd say you don't need one. I do however have a external blu-ray drive that I plug in when I want to make back-ups/burn a movie or if I do happen to purchase a hard copy... The bright side to my external drive is I can use it on my desktops and laptops if I need to & I can take it on the road with ease biggrin.gif

I recently built a Win 8 gaming rig and did it completely without a CD / DVD drive. Just put Win 8 installer on a thumb drive and away I went. Almost every game you could want is available online at this point on Steam, GOG and GMG, including lots of old formerly disc based games that you couldn't easily get to play on a Win 7 / Win 8 machine anyway if it was not for the updated versions you can get from steam and gog online.

i rarely use one anymore, I install linux distros via usb. if i do have stuff on cd\dvd i just usually make an iso on my laptop and save them on an external hdd.

There is also an official tool from Microsoft to make bootable usbs with windows7/8.

BD burner drive is the only reason I've got one.. though I do make backup's of dvd's if need be so I guess it depends on usage. Not only that but if I can buy a physical medium vs digitial for the same price, I opt for the physical one.
