Asus Xonar DG VS Xonar D2X for headset

Hey guys, Currently I have an Asus Xonar DG 5.1 Surround Sound Card with Built in Headphone Amp accompanied by my Sennheiser PC360 headset that I always use.

I've got a friend who getting a new build and has the Xonar D2X 7.1 soundcard, one that is quite more expensive than my current one. He is willing to give it to me for very cheap but I would like some conformation on whether or not this sound card will fit the purposes on which I need.

After some quick research I've found that it seems like the D2X is better for surround systems with speakers? (I could be wrong) and that the card is primary built for the use of speakers rather than headsets/headphones?

As I have said, I always use my headset and only really listen to music/games and VOIP on my PC.

I'm wondering if you guys could just chime in and help me out here, Would I be better sticking to my original soundcard or will I see some improvements by picking up the D2X?

Thanks in advance

This is coming from someone who had both the DX and D2X at one point. I could not for the life of me physically hear any difference between the two with Logitech z-2300 and z-5500 speakers. Now if I was a computer and could see the 0's and 1's then I can probably see the difference.

Upgrading from a DG to D2X might have a tiny improvement but not really noticeable. Now if you get the STX you will notice it for headphone. Otherwise its a huge improvement for speakers.

Overall depends on how much your bud sells it. If its below 100 USD I would get it. It is a good investment because sound cards won't improve much for the next decade..they'll release a new one every couple years for marketing reasons

D2X has 100ohm output impedance so that will be a problem with low-impedance headphones. DG should have ~10ohm output impedance.
At least for me, with 80ohm headphones, the DG sounds better than D1/DX with its 100ohm output impedance. (damping factor.)

As you can see from my signature, I have both Xonar DG and Xonar D1 (which is same as DX).

Ouput impedance isn't what's effecting SQ. If you think the DG sounds better than the D1, it's for reasons other than damping factor.

Seems like the general consensus is that the Xonar DG I have now would be better for my headset. I really don't want to spend money if it's not needed for the soundcard so thanks for the help guys. +Rep to you all.

He came round today and we tried the card out with the headphones, it defiantly made the headphones louder but that's about the only difference I could spot. Maybe slightly better sound quality but nothing like the difference between night and day.
