Applying New Thermal Paste On GPU Worth It?

Thread Starter
As the title suggests, I am wondering If it would be worth it to disassemble my 7850 (which is in perfectly working order, mind you) and put some fresh paste on it.

I mean, I guess it can't hurt right? Or should I not try to fix what isn't broken? The card runs like a champ and never gives me problems. Temps are great and performance is stellar.

What do you guys think?

I think the general consensus is that it isn't worth it on GPUs. The manufacturers ususally do a pretty good job. That said, I did shave off a couple of degrees on my 670s by applying new MX-4 - ymmv.

My opinion is that unless you're seeing unusually high temps, or you're playing around with the cooler (trying to fix a fan or whatnot) don't bother.

I have gotten good results using LiquidMetal Ultra on my GPU, to the tune of about 5c, but that involves pricey (and questionably safe) compound. I've also gotten positive results replacing stock gpu paste with standard tim like AS5, but only a couple degrees.

That said, I generally do it for the fun of it, and it's been on older GPUs that had worse cooling than the improved cooling you see nowadays. If a GPU has satisfactory cooling out of the box, I can't honestly say it's worth it unless you just enjoy doing such things.

If you end up keeping that GPU for over a couple of years you might want to think about it then, as long as you clean the dust out of the fan and fins it should be perfect. smile.gif

The stock compound typically dries out, after a few years depending on use.
Check the cooler periodically for dust.
