Question about 144hz+ monitor

I plan to upgrade my 60hz to a 144hz ASUS VG248QE and I was wondering, if I don't get 144+ at all times will I feel lag/frame tears? I seem to only get 80-100ish in BF3/high performance games.
my specs are I7 2600K 4.3GHZ/GTX 580 1.5GB Stock. Is it still worth it?

No lag. Tearing is possible, but less than you'd get using your current display unless you vSync...

Thanks, the monitor also says it needs Dual-link DVI-D does that mean I have to use both of my DVI ports up and I can't use dual monitors?

It means that your DVI port must be dual link (it's a single port). If you have a video card bought in the last 5 years, then it will have at least one dual link DVI port, and often two (all NVidia cards, HD5xxx series).

Thanks for the answer. Just looked under my desktop and it's dual link DVI.
