AMD II X4 965 3.40 GHz or Intel Haswell Core i5-4430 3.0z? Which one is better in terms of performance in games? Also can the i5-4430 be overclocked?? smile.gif

The I5-4670K can be overclocked it costs $229 after a $10 instant coupon code that is provided on the newegg site in the description of the CPU.

It will def be a whole heck of a lot faster than the X4 965.

Just make sure you get a Z87 board.

If you already own the 4430 then no it will not OC or at least it won't OC very much... you might be able to increase the turbo settings with some boards but I don't know that for sure. You could do some overclocking with the 3rd gen locked CPUs but it was very limited.

If you already own the 965 then OC it.

Stock vs stock the haswell would still most likely have the advantage even at 3GHz especially in single or dual threaded applications.

It should be a LOT better IMO. Go for it but the mobo you listed has socket 1155 and the processor is 1150 so they wont work.

If your getting a 4430 just buy the cheapest z87 or h87 board. I am not really 100% sure but with z87 you might be able to overclock the turbo settings just a tad.

The i5-4430 is much better than the 965, but it won't work on a Gigabyte Z77X-UP7 (which uses the previous Z77 chipset). You would require either a B85, H87, or Z87 motherboard to run a Haswell i5-4xxx CPU like that.

Since you can't overclock at all with non-K Haswell chips like that, you'd be best served financially by getting a B85 or H87 motherboard like Gigabyte's H87-D3H. The exception to that rule is if you need SLI/CrossFire capability, in which case a Z87 board would be required. Gigabyte's model Z87X-D3H would be a good choice for that situation.

Good thing you knew that. I am not surprised they locked it down like that.

So yeh the cheapest board possible would be my opinion. The more money you have to go into a video card the better.
