x58 - Watercool build

Thread Starter
Hi all -

I'm in the beginning stages of compiling a list of parts for a watercooling setup for my EVGA e758 x58 motherboard with an i7-930 processor. A couple of the major reasons for doing a custom loop is my VREG is getting pretty hot past an overclock of 3.6GHz (80C) and I'd like to potentially keep the temperature of the rig on the lower end.

I'm pretty new to this whole process and I need to do more research but here's what I have so far:

1. EK Supermacy Universal CPU
2. EK Full board KIT EVGA X58
3. EK Single Bay Reservoir CSQ
4. XSPC RX360 Triple 120mm Radiator Rev 2.
5. Swiftech MCP655

My reasoning for the EK Supermacy Universal CPU block is if I get tired of my i7-930 in the near future, I could potentially upgrade to something like Ivy Bridge-E and scrap my EK full board kit.

I have a few questions in regards to compression fittings, tubing size, and pump mounting. First off, I'm looking to see what you guys recommend in terms of compression fittings. It looks like from what I've read and researched bitpower and swifttech offer good products.

For tubing size, is there any rule of thumb in terms of loop configuration and appropriate tube diameter?

Lastly, I'd like to potentially mount the Swiftech pump on a fan and find a mount for the reservoir. The products I was looking at seem to be discontinued and I was wondering if you guys knew of anything else out there that was comparable:

1. UN Designs Infinite Bracket
2. UN Designs Z-Bracket

I appreciate any help or input. Thanks!

I would recommend that if you are going to use a bay reservoir that you just get a pump/res and put the MCP655 inside of it. The MCP-35X will work just as well for this build and is a little smaller so you can get a single bay reservoir for that. I don't think a single bay res exists for a MCP-655.

As for the fittings... yes those are good fittings I would stay away from monsoon.

For tubing size I recommend going with the thicker walled tubing like 3/8 x 5/8 or 1/2 x 3/4 not 3/8 x 1/2 or 1/2 x 5/8. 1/2" will give you less restriction but you will have plenty of flow to do either 3/8 or 1/2.

Do you recommend any reservoirs? I was looking to build something similar in terms of reservoir and pump placement as this guy did - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDvWq7Q70Dc

Are you taking my recommendation of the MCP-35x PWM pump or are you dead set on the MCP-655... nothing at all wrong with the MCP-655 but it matters as far as reservoirs go.

Also what do you think of the pump being inside of the bay reservoir? Truly no need to actively cool either of those pumps especially if you go with the PWM versions as they will automatically slow down when your system is idling which will keep them lasting for many more years.

I have no objection to having a pump inside the reservoir. I was looking at something like this - http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17774/ex-res-465/EK_Dual_Bay_Reservoir_w_EK_DCP_22_Pump_Installed_-_Black_Acetal_EK-BAY_DCP_22_Combo_Unit_incl_pump.html?tl=g30c107s152#blank but there seems to be some different thoughts on pump/reservoir combo versus separated.

Regardless, I'm open to suggestions.

I can only recommend the MCP-655 PWM and the MCP-35x PWM pumps. I do not know enough about that pump to say go ahead and grab it.

What are your concerns about having the pump in the reservoir. There can be some differences but what is it that you have heard that makes you worry about combining them.

I don't have any concerns necessarily. But what reservoirs allow to have the those pumps to be included? Thanks.

Well there are quite a few. You can buy them with the pump or separately and then install the pump yourself. You can buy one that goes in a bay or one that you just mount to the top of the pump and put somewhere in the case.
